Re: New IED resistant vehicles!

The thing that really fries my doo-dads about this is.....

People on this forum, for the most part, represent a pretty good cross-section of America (just observing the diversity of boats & the houses they are parked around in the pic posts).
These people will typically fight to the death (well, figuratively) over the non-issues that the politicos float out there as smoke (gay marriage, abortion, the latest joke by Kerry & on & on) that obscure the real issues, like how the 750K/unit here gets divvied up & who is really on the take. Things that our beloved govt has screwed up right at base level. Things that, if exposed & fixed, could possibly start the whole thing back on the right track.
I wonder if my comments would have been received differently here if this was about 500 dollar hammers or 700 dollar toilet seats & not about something that may actually help our defense effort?

I completely agree that is it quite possibly a highly inflated price. That doesn't mean it's something that should only cost $300k though.

But without anything to back up a statement like that, it's just hot air in the wind. Show me something, anything, to indicate that this is the case, and I'll listen. But just pointing out some coincidences doesn't count.

Please see my post #306 above - it's going to take an insider - a deep insider - to blow the whistle. Problem is, nobody's going to do it because there's too much dough being made by too many of them. Unless maybe we could get Mr. Gates to fund the payoff of the insider from the outside.......

Steve:
I do absolutely agree that the government spends (waste) a lot of doe like paying to much for nuts and bolts etc. and we all know pockets get lined, weather it be government or corporations.
But I would personally love to see them spend money on this type of equipment rather than things like sending 10 billion dollars to japan to apologize for WWII

That truck has to worth at least 150,000 dollars WITHOUT any of the ARMY upgrades

Its not like there pounding them out like school busses

And as far as OLD the B-52 is still outlasting all that NEW stuff and putting the bombs on target

Ok gang my goof on the M vs. K but my remark stands that this is ridiculous.

My solution is BRING HOME THE TROOPS.

If not that then let's win this darn thing. I think a well placed mushroom cloud or two would get the point across. Then simply state that any country Proved* to support terrorism gets the same.

*Problem is that we can not let Rummy and Cheney be judge and jury. This really will not work so I am back to solution #1.

New IED resistant vehicles.A pile of hogwash.
I remember something very similar in Lebanon. What was supposed to be a new armored vehicle turned out to be a very heavy very slow moving and very hard to turn vehicle simply because it turned out to be a grossly overweight unmaneuvrable truck. This looks like it is the same thing and yes it is grossly overpriced.
The solution is very much cheaper and very easily available. The US army has thousands of older type battle field tanks like the Pattons. All that needs to be done is take off the turrets and voila, there is a heavy armoured IED proof armed personel carrier ready to boogie. You can even put on a vulcan and 2 m60s for good measure. That is what stopped the IED threat for us in South Lebanon,no reason why it would not work in Iraq. But now nobody would be making millions, so it probably will not happen.

So you have no problem putting your life in the hands of a 60 y/o piece of equipment? Nevermind the maintenance costs associated with something that old. I'm sure they will last forever, just like all pieces of machinery do. These things never wear out and fall apart. There's no need for new equipment to protect our troops. Hell, the Abrams tank isn't worth buying either, since the Sherman was built oh so long ago.

What kind of retarded logic is that? What's wrong with getting new equipment? If there is something WRONG with this new piece of equipment, show something to back that up, and I'll listen. Otherwise, you have nothing worthwhile to contribute.

And way to spin a good thing into trash.

Speedwagon,I could explain a few reasons why the Abrams tank is a superior tank compared to the Pattons and Shermans. What you should understand also is that the Shermans and the Pattons were not used very much and there are a lot of them that never came out of storage, because the cold war never became "hot".What you are dealing with is very little used very good armor with engines build to move the tanks with heavily armored turrets.
Without the turrets these tanks are on a level comparable to the bradly fighting vehicles except that they have treads instead of wheels. It takes an IED of at least 26 pounds to damage these threads.
I have trusted my life to them and I would do so again.

Ok, you've got my attention. But I would imagine that it is more diffucult to drive those things around, with less people capacity, than these new Buffaloes. Probably played into it... and they probably never thought to use old tanks either.
