New impellar fins torn to %X!#@? Rat Crap

Same old story.
Bought a boat.
Got a good deal.
Been over a year still not in the water.

Thunderbolt 500/ 50hp Merc /77

Rectified all fixes by info from this site.
Installed new impellar, new carb kits etc. Thank-you all.
Motor seems to ruin fine but no water squirting out.
Removed lower end and inpellar fins all gone. The hole in the middle of the metal cup that goes over the shaft and covers the impellar is enlongated now and metal burn marks around hole in the metal cup. There is a very small square hole notched in the top of the cup and the housing that covers the metal cup also has a indent on the inside.
Was the notch in the cup suppose to seat in the housing that covers the metal cup?Could I have tightened this housing too tight?
Enough of bla bla!
Could someone help?
I know I need a new impellar thats a gimmy?

It was run without water. Now you need a complete water pump.

If it was submersed when it was run, then there is something plugging up the water intake, or something allowing air to get into it.

They wipe out in one rap of the throttle, or about 5 seconds idling without water.

Jmartin is right, I found out the hard way with my old Nissan, I ran it briefly without any water and that was all it took.
I seen another guy this summer tilt his motor completely out of the water, with it still running and in gear no less and he was replacing his impeller the following week-end........Irv964
