new impeller for 1980 evinrude

Dealer told me the impeller for the flat shaft (the impeller does not have a slot for the half moon key, just a peice of plastic for the key) is now used on the old half moon key, drive shafts. Is this so????? Am I doing something wrong? I cant" beleave I am the only one with this problem???? Thanks!

The new waterpump kit for my 1980 115 V4 came with the plastic woodruff key. Other than being a bit tricky to install without the key falling out when you try to put the waterpump all the way down the shaft, it seems to work fine. My dealer told me that this is the ONLY key used with the new waterpumps. So, at least your dealer and my dealer agreee....
Do be carefull on the orientation of the key (follow the diagram that comes in the kit). If you put the plastic key in facing the wrong way, or turned 90 degrees out of phase, you will prob not be able to get the water pump on, or (as happened to me), the key will fall out just before the water pump seats against the housing (and you can't see it happen). When properly assembled, you can feel some resistance when you turn the drive shaft by hand, and can hear the impeller trying to "suck". Good luck.
