new impeller no water

i have a 85 9.8 merc and i installed a new impellor and i still don't have water coming out the pee-hole. I pulled the manifold cover off and ran it and had water coming out of the copper tube, so i know water is flowing. Why isn't water flowing out with the cover on. I also replaced the thermostat and the rubber hose ids clean.this is my first boat motor i ever worked on but i am baffled on it already. anyone have any ideas? do these motors need to be primed?

If you have a thermostat, you won't get water running out the pee hole until the system comes up to temp. Usually takes a min or so on my 15. Also, make sure you snake a wire up the hole to make sure you have no blockage.

tried pushing a wire through and no blockage. let the engine run for 5 min with the thermostat in and still had no water.

Isn't the pee hose supposed to pee all the time? I don't have a thermostat, so mine pees all the time. I guess if it did you would not know if the thermo was stuck, huh? Never mind me!!

Its possibly that you didnt install the key into the impeller when you installed it. I did that my last impeller change and was wondering why i wasn't spitting water until I saw the key sitting there on the driveway after I had reassembled!
