New impeller, still won't pump.

I've rebuilt this old baby that I picked up on a farm leaning agaisnt a windmill a year ago. (I wasn't leaning, the engine was). She, or he as the case may be, is refreshed inside and out and has a new coat of paint and looks like it just came off the assembly line.

I put it in a barrel of water and fired it up yesterday. It runs smooth and powerful as a rutting buck. But, even though it has a new impeller and the lower end is all clean inside, it does not pump water. What a drag eh?

Any ideas. I am sure the impeller is installed correctly

in a barrel it has to be submerge 1/2 up the leg, also you are only going to get a mist or droplets out the exhausts relief ports on the leg. that is it's only tale tell.

Make sure you let it run long enough for the thermostat to open. Then check temp of cylinder head - you should be able to touch for a few seconds without burning your fingers. Or sprinkle a little water on the head - it should not sizzle. Did you check the thermostat? Make sure it opens at 140-150 degrees.
