New Ingition Switch Problem

I just installed a new ignition switch purchased on this site. The switch is the 3 position, push to choke OMC switch for my 91 Evinrude 90hp. First of all, the wiring diagram did not match up with the actual switch I received. So, after several trial and errors the switch does almost everything right. Position 1- off. Position 2- run, push to choke. Position 3- start. However, after starting the engine and letting it run I return the key to position 1, but the motor won't turn off. I have to choke it or remove the emergency kill switch to turn the motor off. Any ideas? I know (think) it might be a crossed wire, but I don't know which one since everything else works perfectly.

Is you switch labeled like this diagram and will this help?

That is how the original switch looks, but the replacement is somewhat different. Mine also has a few more wires going to some of the connections than what is in the diagram. I'll try to match it up when it's daylight again.

Have you cross referenced the P/N to be sure it is correct for you motor?

According to the box and the website (iboats store) it is the correct model. It has the same number of wire poles. It seems to do everything it is supposed to do, but turn off. Put the key in, turn to next position and push in- choke is activated. Turn to next position and starter engages. Release and the motor runs. Return to 1st position (where motor should turn off) and it continues to run.

The smaller diagram in the attachment indicates the "off" condition. Check the switch to see if it is functioning properly. If so, recheck your wiring to the switch.

How do I check the switch? I checked the wiring and it appears to be correct, as everything works except it won't turn off.

Well, I got out the continuity tester to see if there was power on the switch where there shouldn't be. I must have touched the wrong pole, because now the switch won't work at all. I checked the ignition fuse and it is in ok shape. But when I turn the key, nothing at all. I put the old switch (which worked, except the housing was cracked where the nut attaches) and it doesn't work either. Turn the key- nothing. Any idea what is going on? It seemed straight forward to replace the thing from the beginning.

There has to be a blown fuse somewhere. There should be a red wire coming from the 12v side of the solenoid which is fused and it should come out of that fuse holder as a red/purple wire going to the ignition. The in-line fuse should be under the cowl.

I'll look for that fuse when it's daylight. Could I have touched something wrong with the continuity tester to blow the fuse? I've got decent motor skills, having worked on motorcycles for years, but these (should be) simple switch problems have me stumped.

OK- I found the fuse under the cowl. Short, 32v fuse that is blown. I'll change it later today and see how it works. Thanks.
