I bought a boat that had been restored, and got it mainly b/c I like the hull/improvments. My first Johnson.

It was made 6/2000, but is a year "2001." It has 200 hours (per seller). It is a 250 Ocean Pro.

I assume this has a carb...not EFI? I imagine it will go through some gas.

What is the track record for these motors? Reliability? Have the 2001 oil pumps been reliable, or should I mix?

Did the Bombardier take over effect that years crop?

Sorry for all the questions, but I have always had mercs and yamahas, and know nothing about this engine.

Thanks.

Re: New Johnson Owner....General Questions

Johnson OP......Welcome to the site. If you want some real good info you should post this on the Johnson/Evinrude site, the best experts are there. Anyway, you are correct, that motor is carbed and will go through gas, I have 1999 200 and it drinks fuel, don't worry you'll get used to it. The OMS pumps were pretty reliable at that point, I wouldn't premix. Bombardier took over in 2000, I believe, so that is one of theirs, which is a good thing. Just make sure you maintain it and it will be good to you. Ask the seller when the last time the water pump was changed. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and posted over there, as well, but I think you pretty much confirmed my thoughts on it. I am not sure when previous owner changed the water pump, and to be honest, I take anything a seller tells me with a grain of salt (e.g., "She is great on gas").

Would you change it just to be safe?

Mike,

www.evinrude.com

www.johnson.com

The big Johnson V6's -200-225-250 - are not made anymore due to EPA regs. They only go up to 175hp now. Actually according to the different magazine tests on similar outboards, the Mercs usually burned more fuel at WOT than the Johnsons or Yamahas
