Ok, this is all new territory to me, so if the question sounds dumb sorry. I have not gotten a manual yet...working on it.I just picked up a bass tracker with a merc 40 hp. I want to replace the fuel lines as well as a bunch of other stuff, but I cant access some of the hoses. I can get the very top of the motor off, I can get the piece that wraps the around motor off,and this will expose the top of the hoses, but what about the outer casing that goes down to the prop (this is the base of the motor all the way down...one piece) Is there a way to get this off? or is it going to be a major chore? Thanks, bear with me I know my questions might be dumb, but if I dont ask I wont know how to do it.
Thanks,
Dave
by the way if it matters this is a 1981 motor.

Hey Dave, welcome to iboats.
The only questions that I have found to be dumb, are the one's that are never asked.
Since this is a Mercury outboard, let me move it there for you.
Again, welcome to iboats.

The outer casing you are referring to are
a.) The exhaust housing
b.) The lower unit

You are going to want to leave the upper part (the exhaust housing) in place. The lower unit is held on by at least 3 bolts, I'm not totally familiar with the 40 HP but there should be two towards the front of the housing and probably two in the back. One may be under a trim tab (looks like a little fin just above the propeller). Use the red "Search" button at the top of this page and do a search on lower unit removal. It's a fairly easy process, but there are a few things you need to be mindful of throughout the process. You will want to put a new impeller in the waterpump when you have the lower unit off. Do a "Search" on that as well. That is one of the most important maintainence functions you need to perform. There is not much you will want to replace inside the exhaust housing so no worries there.

Welcome to iboats!

Enjoy your new rig!

Thank You for the replies. I will see what I can come up with tommorow on the motor. I agree and plan on replacing the impeller, waterpump, fuel filter, all the fluids and the prop...which looks like it went through WWII
Thanks again,
Dave
