I'm sorry. What were you saying! I was busy watching Bill Dance. I have seen some of these before but I still laugh at them. Do you ever stop and think something through because you have a feeling your about to have a Bill Dance moment?

I always remove my bar and balls on the truck. I leave my Class II in the Subaru because it has now rusted solidly in place. Main reason I don't do that with the truck!

I take mine out when I am not towing. However, when I am camping and drop my trailer, it still get me when I walk past in the dark, and i serves as a painful reminder of why I like to take it off!

I think most people just like to show off their fancy hitch.

I always remove it when it's not needed.

thanks for the legal heads up though.

Mine gets used nearly every day -- no way am I going to deal with that. Besides, having the draw bar in the back of my Yukon makes it an uncontrolled missle in the event of an accident. Yup -- I could lash it down but it is perfectly safe where it is. Locked to my receiver. I won't back into you but I'm not so sure you won't run into me so stay off your phone and drive your car. As for the policy makers, do something about the economy and make yourselves useful.

Glad I saw this because I didn't realize it was illegal in PA. I always try to take mine off, since its been on for 3 weeks now since I bought my boat and it's already rusty and crappy looking, also the whole whacking it with my shins thing really sucks and works as a reason to take it off as well.

You will only whack your shins on it once, unless there is something wrong with you. :D

Years ago, many people would slip an orange tennis ball over the ball. Hey, guess what? Some of us still do.

I really feel sorry for you people that continue to reside in the communist state. (formerly known as Illinois)

Just keep on involuntarily writing those charity checks to the fine folks in Springfield who then forward them directly to those fine criminals in Chitcago!

Re: New Laws for 2012

A few pickup trucks back I got rear ended at a traffic light, in front of a cop. I had a custom built receiver hitch / bumper mount that I made myself after two previous bumpers got destroyed.
Some woman wasn't paying attention and rammed her brand new Honda Accord into my load equalizing drawbar. Her car was a mess, my truck didn't get a scratch. In her ranting and raving to the officer about the hitch sticking out, his reply was that she had no business being a food off my back bumper. She continued to rant and rave and wanted my truck off the hood of her car, the officer came over to me and told me to just grant the woman her wish. I put the truck in 4x4 low and stomped on the gas, removing what was left of her radiator, hood, radiator support, hood latch and anything else that chose to come with it. The officer came up to me and said I could go, she was going to be a while. She received a failure to yield, failure to maintain proper distance, careless driving, and failure to obey traffic signals.

The only damage to my truck was that I lost a stick on red reflector I had stuck on the rear end of the drawbar. Without the drawbar on, I'd be looking at a bed, frame repair and all sorts of rear sheet metal damage.

I leave mine installed, on the truck I tow my boat with I replaced the pin for the drawbar with an extra long 5/8" bolt with the nut welded in place to prevent theft. If they want to steal it, they'll need a hack saw or torch.
I've seen too many trailers, hitches and draw bars stolen at the ramp over the years.

In my opinion the only reason for a bright colored ball cover is to protect someone's legs, if their driving 12" off my back bumper at any time, they deserve what they get.

Mine stays on. Would it really make a difference in an accident if I had a red cover on it?

I'll admit to perhaps something being wrong with me, but I can guarantee that the second time makes you a true believer!

Thought about this the other day and tried to remove the receiver. Nope - rusted solid. I took the ball off which does absolutely no good, except to provide a nice flat surface to step on and reach my roof rack...

LOl... till your wet shoe slips off the hitch.

Then you whack your chin on the roof, your nose on the rear window, your knee on the hitch, and the back of your head on the concrete. You might even do the splits and crack your .... never mind. :)
