New Mbr with a ??????

I just purchased a 94 Bayliner CMD Flybridge with a Merc 5.0 Alpha one. I took it out and was cruiseing along about 20knt and it began slowing down and then just quit. I tried for about an hour to get it started but no luck. I finally was towed into port, trailered the boat and went home. I ended up replacing the starter and was able to get it running in the driveway with water to the engine, placed it in gear and all and no problems. Today I took it down to the dock, backed the boat in until the out drive in in the water started the engine to warm the engine up, so I leave the engine running and back her in (no problems), back it off the trailer and shifter into forward and it stalled. tried to start the engine and she won't start!! I trailered the boat again and pulled it far enough out to leave the outdrive submerged and it wouldn't start. Pull it out of the water, get it back home, connect the water hose and try starting her, she fires right up no problem. What in the world could possible be the problem, does this boat not like water??

Scott

I would say that the impeller is shot and the engine is overheating. If this isn't a joke then I would say you need to get with someone with a little more experience on boats and get some advice before you try taking the boat out or starting it again. Maybe an owner's manual and a safe boating course would be in order.

Take it to a Mercruiser dealer, they will have to fix the raw water pump since you ran it without water attached to the drive.
Then get them to explain what you did wrong, and SHOW you how to run the boat out of the water properly.
You probably had the drive tilted up while running also, so maybe new ujoints are in your future.
Boats get REAL expensive, REAL fast when you have no clue what you are doing.

Guys,
I'm not STUPID!! First off Yes I had water hooked to the boat while I had it runing in the driveway. The impeller is brand new, the guy I bought it from had just replaced it.

well nobody said you were but
so I leave the engine running and back her in
thats enough to cook the pump

what they did say was to get someone who has spent some time around boats so they can help you learn the ropes

tommays

Ayuh,..........

Sorry Jakester79,.......

Either,.. You've got to take the advice of these folks,+ Learn How boats work,.............

Or,....... Maybe go back,+ Rethink/Rewrite the way you've posted your Problems.........

'Cause the way I read your post,....... You've run the motor Several Times for Several Minutes on the trailer, at the boatlaunch,.........

Personally,........... I wouldn't even Crank the motor with the Starter, without Water at the Pump,............
Much less Start the Motor.................

When you say "won't start" does that mean that it cranks but doesn't fire up or doesn't crank at all? There was an excellent post recently by Don S. that guides a person through a starting problem. I don't have the link but I'm sure someone else does.

I'm sorry, but I doubt you backed down the ramp with the drive down and a hose attached to it.
Even with a brand new impeller, that much running would destroy an impeller. It only takes 15 seconds and they are scrap.

Don S,
Yes your are right I should have worded my post differently, Every time I ran the engine at the house in the driveway I had the water hose connected before starting the engine with water shooting out the exhaust of the impeller. As for today at the boat ramp, I had the boat out far enough to where the out drive and impeller were just below water, as soon as I got the engine started I then had it backed into the water.

every one of us techs know that boats were not designed to get wet, otherwise they would be a bit more moisture resistant.
sounds almost like an exhaust restriction. to much back pressure when submerged. is this carbed or "fool" injected :)

Ill take a noob (not to old school mechanics)stab at saying to check your fuel filter/pump first.
When you say that it slowly died instead of just cutting out, it leads me to think that fuel starvation is present and it is not electrical.
Generaly an electro problem would be a dead cutout of power.
When you tried starting it on the lake for an hour , did you smell fuel ?
An hour of cranking will definately foul the plugs and the odor of fuel would dominate the air.
If you did not smell fuel, there was none.
A plugged filter or failing pump may actualy pull enough prime and trickle enough fuel to start a carborated engine and mabey even idle utill presure is lost from the damand of open throttle, explaining why it started in your driveway and at the dock.
When you where out on the lake, the combonation of low presure and the heat of the engine could explain why it would not restart. The fuel would evaporate before reaching the combustion chamber (vapor lock).
Check/replace the fuel filter first and make sure the fuel is flowing from the tank to the pump. Either could be the culprit as well.
I change my filters every year or 40 hrs wichever comes first on all 4 of my boats.
If it cannot pull a prime , it cannot pump.

Sagabu,
I was thinking along the same lines due to it slowing before stalling. I have pulled the fuel filter at the carb and it had a little sedement but not enough to restrict the flow of fuel, I have also pulled the water seperatore on th efuel line and no sign of water. My next guess was the fuel pump or opening the fuel tank to see if there was something wrong in there.
