Hi guys,
I am glad I found a place to get some information on my "old" boat. First off, I am new to boats, but consider myself an excelent shade tree mechanic. I just picked up a 1984 Wellcraft 23' Aftcabin, with a original Mercruiser 5.7L 260hp. I am looking for lititure on repair/maintence on this drive system. Is there anything like a "Hayes" book for cars on boats/drivelines?

I am not sure what outdrive in on the boat, but it is original. I will go outside tomorrow and see if I can get some numbers.

I am really just looking for general informaton on this setup so I can maintain it. Everything is in great shape as I see it. Being a Chevy 350 I don't anticipate any problems working on it myself.

Any input would be great, Thanks
Ryan

If you want to maintain and fix your Mercruiser, get an OEM mercruiser manual. Not a Seloc or Clymers aftermarket waste of money.
For your engine, you need Merc manual #3. pn 90-95693. You can usually find a used one on ebay.
As far as a manual for your drive, it's online...... Free.

Just scroll down to the index and click on the section letter you want to see.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have the basic manual for the stern drive that came with the boat I guess, I can't believe the previous owner kept it! It is about 30 pages, but seems rather basic. Pehaps this is all I need to keep up the drive?

As for the engine, I will look around on Ebay and try to find something on it.

If I read correctly this is an Alpha 1 drive on my 260? Anything special I should know about this motor/drive combo?

I am really just grasping for knoledge here, sorry!

Did you even go to the link I posted? It's the service manual for the drive. It includes the transom shield, and trim systems, power steering, corrosion control and a lot of other things. It is NOT a 30 page owners manual, it's closer to 400 pages of detailed information.
But,,,,,,,,,,,, you have to look at it, read it and understand it. I can't do that for you.

I am reading the manaul you sent, but the pdf navigation is very cryptic and I cannot get to information pertaining to my particular drive. Perhaps I am just missing something.

haha so true, a good comparison is dr. house from the tv show house, he knows more than just about anyone but will treat you like a total jerk while helping you most of the time, personally being a new kid on the block im already use to it, beats taking your boat to the dealer and getting charged for their half witted info. now if he would just respond to some of my questions that would be great!

LOL:D

Don't take it personally. However, when the top techs here ( Don S. is one of them) take the time to post concise answers to your questions, and then you reply with a post that indicates you didn't even read them, they get frustrated and you get sarcasm. Personally, I find Don S.'s directness to be great...

Shame on you... unfair statement...you just don't get it...

Insulting people seldom makes them eager to help...good luck with that one...

thanks for taking bits and pieces of my post and making them sound how YOU want them to sound. i like how you didn't use the sentence right after that where i said his advice is very note worthy etc, but decided to take HALF a sentence i said, cut it up, and post that.....

Umm...I'm not sure 87baylinercapri needs to calm down. I think his original post got misinterpreted as it was meant to be humorous. (I thought it was funny). Didn't sound to me like he was complaining which is what I think his 2nd post was trying to clarify.

Though a smile or something would have made it easier to see it as humor, so I could be mistaken....

;) You could be right, or not. I suspect this will become clearer as to intent in the next few posts. ;)

Re: New member, new boat, need some info on driveline?

you definitely need to do that. and while you are at it you can check the drive lube for water intrusion or chunks of your gears all mashed up in there.

you can check your alignment.. check the bellows.. check gimble bearing.. u joints.. tak ea look at your coupler.. grease everything up.. follow the manual instructions for everything.. on and get some new seals for the lube fill screws.. the old ones can waste away and leak on ya.. and fill the lube from the bottom.. get a pump from a local shop.. they cost like $8 or less or something like that..

Would replacing the trim sender and limit switch be a lot more work ontop of what you have already listed? See my thread about my busted trim sender and limit switch
