My father and a friend from work purchased a 1985 SunRunner Sundance/Runabout 19.5 ft. With a 1986 MCM170 Serial#A475274, Alpha One serial #A470443. Owned by an older gentleman and very well taken care of, the hour counter is at 90. Put a battery in got a click,I bridged the solenoid to get it to start ran well after it cleared the carb. No water coming in from impeller, parts coming. Just wanted to say Hello to everyone here have been reading non stop since we procured the boat, I'm hoping to be a happy 470 owner but only time will tell.

Nothing wrong with a 470 if you understand it. If youve been reading the posts you know the tale. Might need a speedi sleeve on camshaft at some point, regulator alternator is a prob sometimes, try not to overheat it and dont run it too hard ie around 3/4 throttle and youll go for years. I put around 2500 hours on mine and sold it as a good running unit. Probably put more maintenance time into starter repairs than all other things combined. This over a period of 20 years.

Wow, pride 90 hours. Thats pretty amazing for an 85. Some of the negative folks would say the motors not run need the most parts. I think if the po started it occasionally and took care of it you got yourself a nice low hour rig. telstar nice reply, alot of folks dont like the 470 and would have peed on his purchase. There are quite a few 470 owners here and non owners that are really great and helped me alot. (i have twins that i havent got wet yet) Welcome to the forum.

Wow 90, hours, nice. Even with the low hours you want to do a couple of things. Get a antifreeze tester and make sure the coolant is up to spec, about 50/50. Install a new impeller and run it on the muffs to operating temp. Make sure the thermostat opens and you do not overheat (BAD). While running and up to temp, look at the lower starboard side of the engine waterpump to make sure no coolant is leaking out of the little weep hole (cam seals). The other thing you will want to do a a compression check and a cooling system pressure check. Autozone will lend you the tools for free. If all is good, you should be good to go. Welcome to the "club".:D

Don't get all excited about 90 hours on the hour meter, they do get replaced when they quit, and sometimes they aren't even installed until many years later.

If you got a click that is pretty easy to diagnose. You have two solenoids, one (slave) on the port side of the block, the other on the starter. Grab a voltmeter and open it up and listen when someone hits the switch. If the slave clicks, check for +12 volts on the large terminal with the Y/R wire. No voltage= bad slave, voltage indicates problems with the starter solenoid. One note if you need a new slave, make sure you get the right one #11 here http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...nbr=10&bdesc=STARTER+MOTOR+AND+WIRING+HARNESS Merc uses two different solenoids, this one is for the 470, most other motors take a different one. Good luck.

Re: New member to the 470/170 club

Started pulling connections on everything and giving them a good cleaning, got the boat to turn over from the key, as well as getting the blower and bilge to work. Put it in a cut off 300 gal trash can and fired it up after a little turning over. No flow. Ordered impeller and pump kit as well as thermostat. After that is replaced I will be able to check if its pumping and go from there. And I believe it is the original hour counter cause its the same level of age as the rest of the instrument panel. Hoping to be in lake Mead soon.

If you put in a trash can you have to make sure the water level is above the impeller pump housing, not just above the intakes. Muffs and a hose work better. Glad you got it started.
