I'm looking for a new 15hp motor (long shaft, electric start with remote control) for a 16' aluminum boat. I can get a '06 merc for ~$2800 for everything (motor, prop, gas tank, controller box and cables), but I found a new "still in the box" '04 15 hp EL merc for $2250 (most likely doesn't have control box included).

Any opinions on getting a new "older" motor? Would I gain anything over spending the extra $300 for the '06 model?

I'm sticking with merc b/c no one services yamaha/honda/suzuki in the Pittsburgh area.

Re: New motor advice

Rather go for the new one as it will still be under warranty, even though the older motor is still in the box the warranty might have expired ......

Re: New motor advice

I just found a few local Tohatsu dealers and could possible get an 18hp for the price of the 15hp mercs. I'm not very familiar with the Tohatsu brand, but I read that they make all mercs under 30hp. The extra 3 hp would be nice, since most of the lakes around me allow 20hp.

go with the new merc, with everything,, it's going to cost you more than $550 to get the controller etc. if they will install for that price. definately.

I'm a penny pincher like most of us.
In this case go newer for the little added cost.
Sometimes saving a penny costs you a dollar down the road.

Good Luck........ CF
