New Motor - Maintenance / Oil Change / Lower Unit Fluid?

As I approach the 1st 20 hours (currently 17 hrs) on my new boat motor (Yam 150 4-stroke), I was told that I would need to get an oil pump in order to change the oil? If so, any thoughts on what brand/type I should use? Also, I suppose it is good to change the oil filter as well?

And, regarding the lower unit fluid, I assume I can get an inexpensive "quart" pump for that, correct?

Any additional tips you can give as I begin my yearly maintenance plan? I would prefer to save a little money, and do the bare minimum now and next summer have it service appropriately. Or, DO I REALLY need to take it in for a 20 hour tune up? It appears to be running good to me?

go to: bogueinletnc.com/yamaha for detailed instructions with photos on oil changes in motor and lower unit, plus other repair/preventive maintenance procedures. Be sure to stabilize your fuel all the time and especially when you're "putting up" motor for the winter. Stabil Marine(Walmart $20/quart) is good for this. Add a fuel/water seperator (Walmart $27) or the Yamaha or Racor units are good. Grease all the fittings. Yamaha sells a Corrosion Protectant(like a spray grease) in a spray can that I use on my tilt/trim motor/pump/rods to prevent corrosion on these especially if you run in salt water. Remove your prop, check for fishing line wrapped around shaft, check seals, grease shaft splines, etc. Buy a Yamaha Outboard Motor Manual and read/study it to learn more. Good Luck!

Robert,

Thanks for the direction / guidance! I do plan to get a service manual for the motor.

One more question, is it possible to drain the oil versus pump it out on a 2009 Yam 150 4-Stroke?

I honestly don't know about removing the crankcase oil on that motor...my experience is most all with the 2 stroke motors. the lower unit drain/refill is very easy with that little pump from Walmart. Hopefully one of the 4 stroke guys on this forum can give guidance on crankcase/filter changes. Good Luck!

yes, the rubber snout has a drain plug in the very aft center of the mid section.
14mm hex I belive, careful its messy.
I suck it out througfh the dipstick.
if you wish to drain it cut a gallon jug and add a hose to the cap end and attempt to catch it.
