New motor oil changing question

Just got a new 75 ELPT 4S. Dealer say I should get the oil changed the first time at 25 then 50 and then 100 hours. All I can find in the owner's manual is the regular 100 hour or once a year oil change.
While I think changing the oil on a new motor after a few hours would be a good ideal, not sure why I would need a 50 hours oil change.
Is this a mercury recommendation or just the deal hoping for more business?

Thanks

Re: New motor oil changing question

look at it this way, regardless of what it is, its cheap insurance, and if you have a problem with the motor while its still under dealer warranty, they cant void it and refuse to work on it due to not having proper dealer service

at any rate, it cant hurt it

Probably because of more metal being shed from the break in. I agree it's cheap insurance. Why chance taking years off an engine because of it.

Why would you consider having the dealer do the work?? One of the reasons for coming on these forums is to learn to do those simple things yourself. Biggest thing to be careful with 4 stroke oil changes is to make sure you torque the drain bolt back in. They can flatten the washer if cranked too hard. Otherwise, what a simple chore...
Then you can be changing your oil whenever the thought strikes you....:)

lower unit oil should also be changed at the same time. That nasty smellin old gunk will also pick up shavings, as noticed on the magnetic drain plug.

Buy a manual, get to know your motor and save a few bucks along the way...

Change it yourself. too easy. I would go with the recommended times tho. A new motor has a break in period as we all know. they shed metal filings as the gears "seat" into each other. for a few bux I would change the oil. better safe than shopping for a new one. and change the lower like triumphrick said.
