i just got an 87 20' grumman pontoon with a blown 70 hp mercury. i am finding it impossible to find a reasonable priced powerhead. i found a 115hp whole unit for 1500 so i am thinking of getting it, it has been the smallest i can find. the sticker below the controls say that the boat is rated for 70hp will a 115 work for this or will i regret it later the engine is comming off a 24' party barge. has anyone done this or does anyone know where to get a good used powerhead or whole units.
thanks

Re: new motor

I don't think you want to put a 115 on there. Exceeding the max horsepower rating by that much would be dangerous. You might try asking about powerheads over in the Johnsonrude section. Lots of good info there and I'll bet someone will be able to help. Good luck. I know it's frustrating to have a boat you can't use.

Re: new motor

thanks i think i save untill i find a 70 powerhead or just wait and this winter buy a newer 70hp. i am redoing the whole thing seats, floor, and rails so i might as well just spend the money on a new motor i wont worry about.

Good call. Definitely start hanging around the Johnnyrude section though. It will be worth your time. Also, have you been here?

Really neat site. Free shipping, great customer service, and they cater to guys like you who are doing a resto.

Comcast is my internet provider & I have no issues at all going to pontoonstuff. Their problem is with email accounts so you have to have another email client other than Comcast if you use Outlook/Outlook Express like gmail, aol etc. etc. I use AOL & Gmail to email them & comcast to view/read & post on the pontoon website. Email seems to be their only problem with Comcast.

I know I'm beginning to sound like a broken record, but you need to ask that question in the Johnson/Evinrude section. If there is anyone on here who has an answer, and there probably is, that's where you'll find them. ;)
