Once you start getting up on plain they will be even with the hull, any more and your bow will dig in if they are too strong. The single 80s on on my rough estamated 3300 pound four winns. I used the guide for feet by motor size to get mine.

I hope for your sake the 80lb actuators are the same length as the 60lb ones you measured for.

They are the same length.

Re: Smart Tabs II (Big Boat) Install Thread w/ Pics UPDATE

If an actuator fails just tie a length of rope to the tab bracket on the other one, pull it up and tie it off to a cleat- that will hold it up and it won't cause any issues that way. I've done that with my tabs when parking my boat stern first against the bank. (Don't ask- it was the only way to keep wakes from crashing over my stern.) This kept the tabs up and off the ground and it was easy to do.

My experience has been that actuator failures are pretty uncommon. Don't worry too much about something that may not happen for quite a while.

My only issue with the installation was the holes being drilled in the fiberglass without chamfering the holes. Chipping the gelcoat but since it's not visible maybe it doesn't matter. Even though the 3M tape may be aggressive, is it waterproof? Will it seal out water from within the holes forever? I would have had to put some sealant in the holes personally.

I hope you like that set as much as I do mine. It does take some fine tuning to get the right setup for you boat and loads. I ended up going with a smaller actuator.

One way to tell if the actuators are too strong for the application is lots of water splashing out back because the tabs are pushing down into the water rather than sticking straight out in line with the hull.

They really do help the boat get on plane quicker, and eliminate porpoising.

BTW, that was a good price. I just checked the tabs I bought and the price went up $25 since June!!! Holy Cow!

Yes, there were copious amounts of 3M 5200 in each and every hole...

Re: Smart Tabs II (Big Boat) Install Thread w/ Pics UPDATE

So, Here's how the test went.

It didn't...

Got to the lake, and as I was unloading and backing the boat off the trailer, I lost reverse. Not a cable, definitely the gear.

I knew I was going to have to replace the outdrive, and had pretty much decided that would be one of my winter projects, but I was hoping it would give me a couple more lake outings before I had to put her away for the winter.

So no test results at all. :-(

I may be able to test mid-winter. I am in GA afterall, so it's not like the lake will be frozen.

Look for a new post detailing the trailer removal process and the bunking up/supporting of the boat for the hull refinishing and the trailer repair, (new rollers) and a brand new SE106 outdrive. :)

I'm also thinking about redoing everything, bellows were a given, but shift cables, all through hull connections, and new steering system. Mine seems sloppy and there is no lock in either direction?

Ok, that's it for now. New posts for each project, documented as best as I can.

Ingalp01 out... TTYL...

The title of the thread made it sound like you were going to tell us how bad these tabs were. Sorry about the parts breakage and no testing.

Bond-O...

Yes, we did a post on bunking up the boat/removing the trailer, so I could learn how to do it.

When I do this process myself, I am going to photograph and document it step by step for others.

In reference to everyone elses's posts, thanks for the sympathy. If you notice, in one of those Smart tabs pics, you can see how pitted the old drive is anyways. Previous owners left the boat in the water wayyyyy too long and didn't maintain it properly, so replacing the drive in the end will be a good thing.

Too bad it ended that way. But you might want to update/change the title because my initial reaction was that the smart tabs failed to perform, and that is not the case.

Re: NEW new UPDATE!!! Smart Tabs II (Big Boat) w/ Pics / No Test, Outdrive Busted...

K, thanks... Title changed...

BTW... My new 80lbs. actuators showed up today, and they are definitely tougher than the original ones that were sent out. I now believe the original set weren't even 60lbs. actuators, I think they were 30lbs. actuators.

I will send the 60's or 30's back along with a thank you letter and a note explaining that I never got to test with any actuators, so hopefully when I do get the boat back in the water and get everything tested, I can get 60's should I determine the 80's are too strong.

Is everyone confused now...

I still think the Smart Tabs will do what I want. This will be a very productive and satisfying winter and I hope to post some good info., learn a great deal from all of you on here, and I look forward to the spring and more boating.
