I'm in the market for a new boat and outboard. What's up with the carburation versus fuel injection. I'm leaning toward fuel injection and a four stroke in the 115HP to 200HP range. I get the feeling fuel injection will be more fuel efficient and have better emmisions. I'm leaning toward the four stroke for smoother operation and lower noise. Any advice is appreciated! I'm here to learn. ;)

A friend of mine has a 200 yamaha four stroke. It is very efficient and it just purrs. You can hardly hear it at idle. It has run great without a flaw.

Good Luck!!

Yamaha is one of the companies I'm considering, but even they're smaller models are carburated and I'm just curious as to why! What do you think of Suzuki?

Howdy, MasterP.

The 115 4 strokes of Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Suzuki and Johnson are all EFI.

Below that, only Merc, Suzuki and Johnson have EFI 4 strokes.

Sounds to me like I'll be buying FI. What's your take on the direct inject high pres two stroke versus FI four stroke?

If you are able to find similar pricing for the two, in the size you want... (And I am sure to start a fire-storm with the 2-stroke lovers here.)

BUT...There is little doubt that the EFI 4-stroke holds the edge in advantages over the new HDPI 2-strokes, (which are VASTLY superior to the older 2-strokes).

Not the least of these advantages is a history of better durability of 4 vs 2 strokes...

Good Luck with your decision...

I'm really leaning towards four strokes because all I've heard has been good. I admit to knowing little about the two on a professional level, but it seems to me that for strokes are going to carb up less and burn cleaner. I believe that hole shot will probably be won by two strokes but I'm not a water skier at heart. I'm looking for something dependable with plenty of power that will go the mileage!

Suggest that you have a look at direct fuel injected two cycle engines. They are lighter, weigh less, are comparable or have better performance than 4-cycle, and have fewer moving parts which should translate in to better reliablity regardless of what some claim. I bought a 150 hp HPDI Yamaha in April 2002 and with about 100 hour experience running it, it has lived up to all of my expectation including great hole shot on a Grady White Tournament 192 boat. :)

I don't know why but I'm afraid of the HPDI. I don't like to mix the oil and gas. And if I have the machine do it for me there is always the chance for a malfunction. How are the HPDI when it comes to vibration and noise?
