Hello its me again with another outboard problem lol

I got a mid 80's I was told Johnson seahorse 15HP outboard yesterday It came with a gallon of new fuel he had just put in and I ran it on my boat for about 7 miles yesterday and it ran amazing! started first pull every time and just did awesome so I take it out again today but had to refuel I topped the tank off with 6 gallons of premium non ethanol and put in about 15-16 ounces of 2 stroke oil and headed for the ramp. Noticed it was a little bit harder to start went on about 4th pull but she fired up went and parked my truck and jumped in and cruised 6 miles up river and into a lake I noticed once in the lake I got in very shallow and was hitting mud I stopped the engine and rowed out to the river and it was very hard to start smoked a bit but not bad and would die unless I jumped on the throttle then once at WOT it bogged all the way down and died tried starting again and broke my pull rope :( so had to have a budy rescue me... What do yall think it could be???

Thanks

Colton

Re: New outboard problems

Compression test it
Mud in water inlet can cause overheating and blown gaskets etc

Re: New outboard problems

that's almost twice the amount of twc oil called for....50:1 mix is the proper amount

Re: New outboard problems

Have you checked the spark ?? It should jump a 7/16" open air gap on a spark tester.

Re: New outboard problems

Don't have a spark tester but it did spark when I looked at both of them no water on the plugs and when I put the hose up to the pee hole clear water came out with in 3 seconds or so

I re strung the recoil spring with the only rope I had around the house not sure what was different but it felt really jerky instead of smooth like it was before. Due to the barrel I had it in my boat was tipped down and I was pulling up at a pretty good angle and after 3 pulls the dang thing broke again so back to square one

Side question how hard should the ball be? even on the first day I could pump it 2 or 3 times while running possible fuel starvation??

Re: New outboard problems

possible, depends how fast you were pumping and how big your primer is and how fast your engine is running

Re: New outboard problems

it's possible he was running this heavy oil mix to keep it from seizing...a compression test is where I'd go next

Re: New outboard problems

Too much oil! 2 ounces per gallon of gas is what you should have put in! 50:1 mix

To much oil won't hurt it. It will just smoke a lot.
