New Owner 16' Starcraft Holiday

Hello,

Just bought my first boat. Well more accurately my first project that needs to be turned back into a boat.

I think it's a 1978 Holiday. The model number apears to be HLDY 0678 or HLDY 06/8.

I think I did pretty well with it. A friend was looking to get rid of it because he has too many car projects going on so I got the boat, trailer and 65 HP(?) Evenrude with compression but no spark for $175 dollars and a used fleer pick-up cap.

I take delivery as soon as Mother Nature stops raining havoc down on the northeast.

Believe me when I say I know next to nothing about restoring a boat so I am hoping this forum along with some on-site friends will be be enough to get her back in the water as a fish and fun boat.

First order of business is really determining exactly what model and year the Starcraft is. I'm hoping you all could help a very green newb out with the above model number info and these pics.

The Starmada can and will help. I knew squat about boats when I bought mine. I managed to get a lot of work done with these guys help.

I does appear to be a 78' Holiday. Post some more pictures. The first picture is really small. Photobucket is the majority picture site we use. be sure to size them correctly 480 x 640 I think.

Nice project! Check out my Jupiter project for some ideas as it's very similar and started in about the same condition! I paid $200 for mine so congrats from one bottom feeder to another

You have found The MOTHERLOAD of Starcraft boat owners.
I didnt know squat (yes some will say I still don't..) when I purchased mine 2 years ago..But with this websites help from those that went before me, even I was able to go from this to this..With some major mechanical issues along the way that I never would have thought of tackling without this place..

Welcome supernaut! At $175 she looks like a super sweet score buddy, yah! I am thinking once you shovel all the trash out of er you'll have yourself some great bones to rebuild on. You've got what looks to be a great trailer, the hull looks in very good condition, you even have a windshield with all the pieces. Excellent!

Thanks for the welcome, everyone. I'm sure I'm going to have a ton of questions. I was actually looking for a fishing boat when the Holiday popped up. So my goal is to do a rebuild that's both in the original spirit of the boat with some built in fishing functionality and maybe even a little dash of rat rod thrown in just to mess with the local uptight pontoon flotilla. I'll post some better pictures when she is delivered. Which if it keeps raining here in beautiful Northeastern PA will be accomplished by floating her to my front door.

And thanks for some great examples of what can be done!

Welcome!! yeps looks to be a Holiday almost same as mine. not much differnce in the '78 - '79 models real close... I'll be starting work on mine again soon. the guys here on the forums are a gret bunch helped me get started.... at least you have a dash pad on yours...

Great Holiday and what a deal! Welcome aboard Supernaut, I really like your plans for the rig.

An aluminum Starcraft is great for fishing, cruising and zipping around pontoons.

That motor should be able to be brought back to life with some luck, new spark plugs and a few other things, post some questions in the Johnson/Evinrude forum when you get the rig and take a look. Great help over there.

Thanks again for the great welcome. If the stars line up right the boat will be here next Saturday. I?ll have titles in hand, a new hitch installed and an outboard stand built.
Now what?s concerning me after looking at a ton of your projects here is a total lack of indoor workspace. I have access to a ton of tools and equipment. I just have no garage to work in.
Aside from being at the mercy of the weather is this going to create a ton of problems for me?
I?m merrily looking forward to getting my feet wet and then quickly slipping in well over my head.

Nah! A nice boat cover would definately help once you start the rebuild part (epoxy and such). For painting the rig you'll just need to time the forcast right and you will be aok.

For me, I was pumped when I realized the Islander actually fit in my garage! See, I am completely surrounded by trees, totally in the woods. They are constantly dropping stuff.

I think you'll be fine and she'll make for a great project.

UGGGGH! A foot of snow.

Delivery will be delayed again.

Also a portion of the boat referb fund has had to be put back into my Jeep before getting the hitch mounted.

So setbacks but we'll roll with it. Frustration and madcapped money madness are part of this game. Currently working on list of new swear words to pass the time.

Well while your waiting for the snow to melt take an inventory of everything you have with the boat.. so then you can find out what you will need... thats what I did so i would have something to do when it rained down here....

Working up that list too! I?m doing research too. Found a local lumber yard that has some great pricing on MG plywood. I?m seeking out coworkers who are boating types and above all schmoozing my way into accessing a few private launches.

Horse in front of cart? Maybe but its keeping me busy.

And yes you heard Jeep. A 2005 Wrangler Unlimited. This is the model year where the Unlimited was a two door. I always liked the extra length. Now I love the increased towing capability (3,500 lbs.).

I just put four new tires on today and the hitch is going on next week.

How does your's pull?

I can't even feel the boat behind it. they are so light... Pulls great... but my toung on my boat trailer has been extended about 34"....

Boat is here!

Working on getting pictures uploaded. Turns out it's a 1975 (STRA28921275-F6).

It's got a 40 HP Evinrude with compression but no spark. About six or seven gas tanks.

All wood including transom is shot as expected.

The smell indicates that there is an active rodent colony somewhere.

The control cables are not for the Evinrude. There is a Evinrude control box in the boat. I have no idea what I'm doing there.

Electrical system will need to be built from scratch. Also clueless there.

Some evidence of barnacle activity from salt water use in MD.

Trailer is in good shape it's a EZ Loader Sprint with a little rust. Made the 20 mile journey with no heat on the hubs.

Oh! And it came with the wooden skis I'm prettty sure the Fonz used to jump the shark.

Wow that's a lot of gas tanks...if you sell a couple that will help fund the project.

Are they two-line tanks or singe line?

There are some good wiring diagrams on iboats, do a search for more info. Google image search for boat wiring diagram works too.

Initial pics here.

Motor turns out to be a 1974 Evinrude (40455s). It also turned out to be the home of a mother field mouse and a few of her tiny pink nursing offspring which I am giving until this weekend to vacate on their own freewill before the motor is removed and hauled into garage for assessment.

I?m taking the presence of the mice as a good sign that I?m not going to run into one of the timber rattlers that are well known to inhabit the area where the boat had been stored.

Weather looks to be a duck drowning for the next few days including the weekend so clean out will have to wait just a bit longer.
Looks like I have all the supports for a bimini. Not sure if they are standard equipment though. No cloth but I do have some upholstery experience.

Definitely have what looks like the original interior side panels.

Pics aren?t the best but if anyone sees anything they think I need to know about please share.

Looks good. You've got all the pieces which is important. Should be a pretty straightforward restoration.
