After taking the controls apart, and putting them back together a few times. It works, a little tight, but works. Not sure if I trust it on the water tho. Shifted for a good 5 minutes, didn't bind up once. Not sure I want to dive in the water while moving bore to change direction.

It's official, you splashed. Congrats on getting it wet and glad to hear you are on the home stretch to getting her fishing. An adjustment here and a tweak there and you will be looking for more project on your boat. Well done.

Well, decided to try it again. I found why the engine starts so hard. With jets, you can't really run them out of water, boy I miss the outboards I'm used to. I knew the carb leaked the fuel off, and needed primed after a few hours. Thanks to a wave , we had whitecaps today, I flooded out the carb. It started leaking in 2 places around the bottom gasket. one was a steady drip, and the other one was just a seep. I guess after about 4 years of not running at all, and another 4 with very little, the gasket would dry out and crack. I think it just needs gaskets, but while it's apart I might as well kit it. Take some of the possibility of other things in the carb away. This fine tuning is getting old. One of these weekends I'm going to lose it (I hope) to get the top made and put on it also. Been in the water twice now, and never left the dock. Still not saying I splashed it tho til I get it to move under it's own power.

Splash! Still have adjustments, and a top to get made. 1 1/2 hrs , no reverse, that's just an adjustment, I think on a jet drive. Quite windy and choppy most of the time, fairly calem when I took pics. So I didn't want to experiment too much. Motor sounds great most of the time. Got a few little bugs to get out. Needs ran, Carb has a hesitation, but less at the end. Want to check more on engine before I give it a real long test.

Thanks, it took awhile. I've adjusted the diverter, and hope I have reverse in it now. Still not sure what I want to do with carburetor or timing, so I'll wait and run it some more first. Just fine tuning it a little. For the next several years probably.

That Lake can get real nasty. Been on it in a small boat and always look ahead and behing for the dreded black line on the water, time to head in. Great shot yes it is a wonderfull place to be and you are blessed to lve so close. Pugetsound. Still looking at the 21st for the trip. couple good books on the kiddle , jug of Irish cream- steak . hot dogs hamburger and potatoes I think I will be in heaven. Hell I might even put some forbidden salt on them. Ed Oh my 4 stroke ran for a hour test today then quit it has a fuel leak at the accelator pump and Mercury says no parts any more gezz its onlya 2002 motor. Did find out today the motor is the same as a Yamaha of same year and they have parts so here goes a hundred or so but less than a new motor. Yamaha parts are three time as expensive for the same as Mercury wanted when they had parts.

I guess there is something to be said for the old johnnyrudes. Even when I had my old 61 Bob at Alpine could had parts stockpiled, or could find a good salvage yard. And they make pills now so you can eat all the salt you want. I dehydrate without it. Altho earplugs help when the wife's at home.

Mercury Motors Suck 9.9 4 stroke only 8 years old and parts are not avlable any longer. Thanks to Yamaha they supply the power head so i can get the needed parts. three times the money but wont run without it. Its the Diagrapham and spring thats leaking and wont allow gas to carb. as well as overboard ,LOL. 59 bucks for a piece of rubber no larger than a quarter and a tiny spring. Sure hard not to lose the spring.Ones in my driveway somewhere.

Seems like the smaller the piece the more expensive. And diaphrams aint cheap for the Johnsons either. A little magnate on an extendable wand is cheap and works good for finding springs, bolts, nuts, etc. But not stainless or aluminum.

Found the spring it was in the lower housing under the gas line. Assenbeled and let it hang till primed and guess what? Dam thing still leaks . Private boat repair guy gave me the only one he could find. Have one on the way ,hopefully by friday will be back together. I used the magnet on my temp light for the trailer and found a liot of stuff. .I told the marina where I ordered the parts that being a Merc and a Yamaha dealer he should or would have known the engines were the same and I remember some time ago he mentioned that Merc had a issue with Yamaha and were no longer able to get there power heads. or parts. People get so self serving and the heck with the public although thats what keeps them going. I would love to see your boat zooming around Garfield bay and also in reverse .

Story from the wife (Sharon) they were on there way back fron Canada after two days and stoped for road work. flagger said ok to go so she tried to start the car which was already running. Lost the air con. lights nav.sys. everything except the car kept running. Now my wife is pretty smart but called me on the cell phone. I said do not tur it off untill you find a open shop in Sandpoint or back to the cabin. Familiar enough as we all are with computers, which mostly run everything as well as Autos. I said I would asume if shut off and restarted from scratch it may reset its self. Got to the cabin shut it off waited till theu unloaded and went out ane Yep started and everything workes fine. The car is a 2010 Town and C Onl thing bad was they had to drive from Bonner frrry to the lake with no A/C or Radio. ountry van. Her friends from Indiana were releaved as well as she was.

Re: New owner 21 ft 74 Starcraft aluminum runabout jet

Too bad your wife had car troubles, but luckily she made it home, and it fixed itself. I was working in a pit/portable asphalt plant right next to some of that construction that for the last few days. Been a hectic few weeks. Glad you found that spring. You'd be surprised what you can find you didn't even know you'd lost with those magnets. And, I'd also like to be zipping around in Garfield, or any other lake with reverse. I've adjusted it a little, not sure if it's enough yet tho. Don't want to go too much and lose some power. Just trial and error. Haven't been able to find my old timing light, so I guess I'll need to borrow one, and find out what to time the 350 engine at. Haven't had to time anything in years. Nice calm day today, the lake and river were like glass. Wished I didn't have to work. Oh, a the guy I usually go to koocanusa with was telling me about a person he knows caught an 18 inch kokanee out of the river, about 1/4 of the way between the car bridge and UPRR bridge. I've been seeing an awful lot of boats fishing around the car bridge on my way to and from work recently. Might have to get that license after all this year.

. I haven't looked it up in regs, but a couple old friends say you can catch 15, and one my old fishin buddy says 6. I'd want to check before I fished. I'm sure you are aware you can get 3 day, or 10 day license in most states too.

Re: New owner 21 ft 74 Starcraft aluminum runabout jet

One more time on the water. Still have a lot of fine tuning to do. I've got reverse now, but still goes forward in what should be the neutral position. Sort of hard to rev the engine to warm it up when it wants to go. I'm hoping running it will get some of the gunk out of the carb. I dumped a pint of Sea Foam in about 20 gal of fuel before we went out. Hoping it will clean the fuel pump and carb, plus a little on pistons and rings. Don't think I'm going to get the 60mph I had promised me, or even 50, 40 is maybe possible, with a lot of adjustments. 33 was top end today. But with very little use in the last 9 years, it'll take awhile to get it going good again. Ed you might recognize a couple things in this first pic. Tried to enlarge it a bit more, but it didn't look that good. I should have went closer.

The Glastron 16 is in the shop waiting our turn. Will not turn over and it has a new type electronic set up I am not familiar with. Re: New owner 21 ft 74 Starcraft aluminum runabout jet

Took thursday off work and thought I might have a chauffeur. Didn't last too long tho. probably made about 65 miles in about 3 hrs. That's with going in a couple areas and slowing down at others to show things off. I usually wasn't at full throttle either. I tried to vary the throttle a lot. I did run out of fuel once tho, but that had to be Puget's fault. I had 10 in another 30 gal tank to be safe. I took a nap instead of fueling the boat up before we left.
Trying to pick up some extra parts. You'd think people would either answer their phones, or voice mails while they're trying to sell things. Went to look at a boat and trailer $350 OBO with the same engine as mine, needing work (also about half the parts had been taken off), newly rebuild outdrive (maybe 10 yr ago), Wakeboard tower (homemade, and all bent up, needing paint), and trailer in excellent shape (2 out of 4 lenses missing, along with bulbs, wires dangling, 4 prong plug with it having electric brakes, and the kicker a 4 to 6 inch gash in one tire with the tube visible) 7 hr day to come home empty handed. Still looking for parts. I at least need a foot throttle. Have to call a guy tomorrow night, he may have one, and a spare jet drive for if mine breaks. For $25, I know it will need work. I'm hoping the foot throttle will be good. One guy I talked to couldn't tell me what happened to the engine out of the boat he was selling. He finally admitted it wasn't his, a guy had left it there this spring and he was trying to get rid of it. No title, and registration wasn't even in his name.Just shows ya got to be careful. 3 others won't even return my calls.
Hope to get it out again next weekend to do some more fine tuning. Won't have Ed to instruct me this time tho. Oh, he says he will try to post some pics of the trip.
