New permanent fuel tank questions

I am going to be installing this fuel tank in my boat and I have a couple questions:

First is mounting. How do I mount this thing? It's going to be mounted above deck under my splashwell. I see Moeller makes this http://www.iboats.com/Moeller-Perma...2238789--**********.028426775--view_id.367219 but I'm not seeing how these would "grab" the tank. Unless there's an indentation near the bottom of the tank or something.

Secondly, I have my fill fuel hose. What hose should I use for the vent and withdrawal? Can those both be the same type of hose?

Ok, before I finished typing my question I already found the first answer myself. This little tid-bit is on Moeller's site:

"Helping you properly secure your tank, convenient hold down grooves molded directly into tank shell work great with Moeller's Permanent Fuel Tank Hold Down Kit (Part No. 035710)."

So I guess that answers that!

Suggestions on the fill and vent hose (and what I should buy) would be great.

what ever you do you better hurry up and get it in the water!!
you know what they say about people that ask a question, and then answer it them self
as for the hoses as long as they are compatable with gas, it would just depend on where you want the fill cap to be.
be sure to double clamp the end fittings

Ayuh,... The Fill hose Has to be with the metal wire in it to bond the fill fitting to the tank...
The vent line needs to be a gas resistent 5/8" hose...
Just make sure it travels Up from the vent, before dropping to the tank,...
The loop keeps Water outa the tank...

Ez,

Use 3/8" or 5/8" 1A fuel line rated for Ethanol fuels as your supply and vent. Fuel supply line size would be determined by engine type and size and vent would be determine by the fittings on the tank and the thru hull vent fixture.

Thanks guys....especially Bondo for that loop tip on the vent. Also, I meant to say withdrawal and vent not fill in my second post. I already have my fill hose. My tank it located directly under the fill, right next to the vent and right next to a pass-thru connector in my splashwell. So I don't need much hose at all. So assuming I can use the same hose for the withdrawal and vent, I probably need like 4-5' of hose. Where should I buy that small quantity?

Fuel fill and vent lines need to meet Coast Guard A1 or A2 specifications. Moeller sells a kit that should work. The other option is a local boat supply house. I bought all my A-1 fuel line locally.

The clips work out really well. I replaced my 19 gal steel fuel tank with a Moeller tank and clips last spring and it was easier that I thought it would be.

Don't forget the anti-syphon valve and don't forget that you're supposed to have double clamps on the barbed fuel supply fittings.

There's a new EPA regulation concerning vents dumping into the water. Afraid I don't know much about it or when it applies, just heard that it's out there. I know that sounds like a "heard it from a guy at the bar who's uncle know's this guy that ....". Maybe something to ask around about. I believe the hold down clamps are for these moeller tanks.

Your tank does not have the grooves in the tank.

Not to take your thread off topic, but....are you replacing removable portable gas tank(s) with the one you posted? I want to replace my 3 6-gallon portables with a large permanent and wasnt sure if I could.

I'm replacing that with one that will fit completely to the one side.

roscoe, that's what I'm seeing too. I think Moeller has their web site screwed up. I wonder if I can just make some aluminum straps to hold it down. I would rather a pre-made solution.

I was thinking the same thing too, the clamps were not made for your style tank. Looks like you need to make a strap that goes over the top of the tank and mates with the reliefs in the top of the tank, piece of 2-1/2 to 3" aluminum that goes from the deck, up and over the tank and back down to the deck. I'd probably make a couple corner brackets too, to keep the tank from walking across the deck. Be aware plastic tanks grow once they are filled with fuel, something like 3-5%, so you have to add in a bit of extra room for your mounting hardware. My 50" tank grows over an inch

I don't think you can use the same hose for vent and withdrawl, unless the fittings are the same size, are they? I thought vent lines were 5/8"?

Forgot to add, place some foam tape between the tank and mounting hardware, so the tank can grow and not be constrained by the mounting HW... And, file/sand the edges of the mounting HW so there are no sharp edges.

I found out the hard way as the mounting HW on my belly tank cut into the tank, causing a massive fuel leak I'm guessing it took years for the mounting HW to cut through the tank, but none the less, the (rough) aluminum bracket edges did wear through the plastic tank. Just another wonderful surprise on my rebuild

Moeller also has a kit with web straps and the "U" shaped brackets. You'll need to check the length of the straps to make sure they're long enough. I've also seen web strap material and fittings at Ace Hardware if you need longer straps.
