new points - where does this thing go?!

I bought myself a new set of points for my 6hp ignition problem.

Included was some small padding type, material of some sort.

These aren't in my current set up, where do they go? I tried googling to find a picture, but no luck.

Soak it with light oil and it rubs against the cam on the dist shaft. That fancy clip is what you use to attach it.

It is called a wick, and used to lubricate the points cam as it runs. It puts a thin film of oil on the cam and wipes off any dirt etc. Rick

Don't dip in in oil, it come's prelubed.

OEM wicks are pre-lubed and should NOT have oil added. No telling what you get with aftermarket ones. Anyway, "soaking" it is way too much oil. A drop will do ya.

so if the rocker clips onto the point base, how does the wick attach?

Your coils have three screws going down through the lamination (green "leafed" part) - two straight-slot and one philipshead. Remove all three and lift the coil. You will notice that the boss that the philipshead screws into, is the same shape as the hole in the clip that came with your kit. It can only fit on one way.

The clip also has a tab bent down on one end, so that the wick can only go in "so far." Place the clip onto the boss, so that the wick rubs against the cam on the crankshaft. Reinstall the coil and all three bolts.

If you have a manual for your motor, there is a top-down photo of you armature plate (with coils installed) in "Section 4 - Ignition." It is on page 4-2, at the top, left corner, under "DESCRIPTION." If you look closely, you will see the wick on the top, right side of the cam, installed on the upper coil's mounting boss.

You da man F R! You just saved me from popping the head off of one of my spare Johnson 6hp motors, to take a pic.

Today's project is to finish a home made bimini for my old "glasscrasher" trihull, photo boat, so that's time I don't have to spend!


PS: (4:05pm) Whew! Maybe I should have stayed indoors taking a pic like F R's! Its hot outside!
