Siggghhhhh. I've been messing with boats long enough so I kinda knew something like this would happen. After a tiring complete day fixing the steering, I started to put the lower unit back on and CRACK...CRUNCH and now this was laying in front of the water pump;

I have NO idea what this is, and can't seem to find the rest of it, although I'm sure it's here somewhere. When I look up the leg I don't see anything that would bring the two shift rods together? Anybody know what this is. I couldn't get the lower unit on, it seemed to hit something and stick?? Help.....more.....please:confused::facepalm:

Just found this pic in another thread, and I've got this feeling this might be the culprit. Someone please confirm and then how do I get it in once I find one?

Sorry, but your signature's first line made me chuckle. Can't help yet. #28 looks like a bolt.

At least you can count on my sig line accurate as proof is in the pudding, right. I hafta just laugh at this point as I should be used to it by now. My poor bride has to hear lots of bad words on days like these......yikes.

So now I'm wondering if it isn't part #24 & 31 from this pic. There's nothing on the end of the upper shift rod. Just an empty space up there.

I'll try and post a pic tomorrow in daylight of the "empty area". It's got to be some part that connects the 2 sections of shift rod because there's nothing that I can see to do it now. I don't know what part to order at this point??

Let me preface this by saying, "I'm really good at treating Hearing Loss". No, really. Not bragging, I enjoy helping folks hear better, and thus, I've gotten myself good at what I do. Folks drive across the state on recommendations of other, current patients and that makes me proud of what I do. However, that leads to a totally opposite truth when it comes to wrenching on boats. While I enjoy it as much, I have NO where neat the same amount of knowledge and I'm rather "negative" when I am working on them. Which brings us to today. After an all day afair with steering, I was way too tired to attack the LU replacement, but I did anyway. Now that I'm a little more rested and not cursing the 'marine gods', I went back for round #2. Here's the "rest of the story"......

My mystery piece belongs to this much larger one;

Still seemed odd to me that this would be the coupling between the 2 shafts.
I shined my light up;

still didn't see anything, so I finally got my hand in there and felt this;

Voila! The real coupling, which has led to the conclusion (via my manual) that the plastic piece is a spacer (dumb idea). So, NOW my question is much, much simpler.

Can I just glue that sucker back togther and use it "As-Is"?? Thanks for letting me rant and rave, btw.

It's in the clamp as we speak. After looking at it, I even figure it would work without that piece glued on, but I've got it, so might as well use it.

Thanks a ton, everybody for all the help. With fingers crossed and God's will, (not in that order of course) she'll be soaking wet this week. If nothing else I'll sit in the boat and have the Admiral spray me with the garden hose.
