New problem

We took the lower unit off to check the water pump and impeller....it was good....got it all back together, took it to the lake to test it and it won't go forward or backward. When you give it the throttle, it acts like it wants to go, but it won't and vice versa for reverse. What could it be??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You didnt get the shift linkage lined up right when you installed the lower.

Re: New problem

Put the shifter in neutral and the lower in neutral and make sure the splines on the lower are in the shift linkage socket before you push the lower all the way on.

Re: New problem

We are having such a hard time finding the right gears in the lower unit. If it is in forward, should it not spin counterclockwise? If it is in reverse, should it not spin clockwise? In neutral, does it spin freely both ways? Should you hear any clicking when spinning it either direction in forward or reverse?? N

Re: New problem

When we think we have it in neutral when it spins freely both ways and the shifter is in neutral, it doesn't want to shift into reverse with the shifter......it has to be forced and I don't think it should need to be forced! Somebody please help.

Re: New problem

If you take this apart in nuetral the lower unit will often jump into forward when you are not looking.---------It is best to put the control in forward when removing the lower unit.----Make sure the lower unit is also in forward on re-assembly.-------Properly assembled and in forward gear you should be able to turn the prop clockwise and it will click.-----Turning the prop counter clockwise should lock it up.--------------In reverse it locks both directions.----There is a very strong spring in there so it takes some effort to get reverse.----You took this apart and did not install a new impeller ???

Re: New problem

Outboard must be taken apart in either REVERSE or Neutral.

The shift slider will default to Forward if the shift shaft is bumped as the spring pushes the slider forward.

There are TWO detents on the sift cam, Reverse, and Neutral. Either will work fine for reassembly as long as the Control Arm is in the same position.

Using pliers, turn the shift shaft until you feel it 'click' into position. Now try to turn the prop, if it turns freely it is in Neutral, it it locks BOTH directions it is in Reverse. Set the Control Arm to that same position.

Reinstall the LU taking care to ensure both the water transfer tube lines up with the pump AND that the shift shaft in the mid-section lines up with the shaft in the top of the LU.

It can sometimes take a few attempts, and poking your finger in between the mid-section pivot to hold the mid-section shift shaft in alignment with the LU shaft.

Take your time, take a break if needed so you can approach it rested.

Biting my tongue sometimes helps me.
