So here is the new project, an old 1960's 14ft lone star. These models were runabouts with a closed covered bow, and the guy before me didn't like that I guess so he chopped the top and turned it into a fishing boat. Im starting with removing all that old blue carpeting, and will end up not having the sides carpeted, just the floor. Im thinking black paint for the interior sidewalls, and gray carpet for the deck. Maybe I'll try to raise the floor up a bit for a casting deck, but the boat is pretty tippy. Throw me some thoughts/ideas.

Any dark paint on a boat creates a scorching surface in the sun. Be careful of the center of gravity when you are mocking up a raised deck...if it's tippy now, that may get worse.

yeah, thats why I am not gonna raise the deck, too tippy. I know the black will get toasty, but I really have no other good ideas for color. I suppose I could do a coat of some kind of white non-slip stuff. Anyone got suggestions?

Lonestar made some open boats also. Almost looks like one of those.

yeah it does look like those, except if you look real close you can tell where he cut the top off, and the floor has bracket for seats and the pulleys for the steering are still up under the side rails. I'm happy about it, I needed a fishing boat anyway:)

Re: New project, 14ft lonestar (Pics)

quick question guys, the motor on here (the 9.8 hp merc) does not seem to spit a steady stream of cooling water. I believe these are supposed to spit out the exhaust, right under the hood, and when i stuck my hand back there it gets wet, but the water is not shooting out, just big drops getting spit out. Is that normal or should it be a stream like a johnson or evinrude? Whats the best way to fix that is it should? Anything to spray up there, or just use a wire or what? Thanks

It should be a steady stream of water. You probably should install a new impeller on it.

Really dumb question guys, but in the motor on this boat which is a early merc 9.9 hp 110, how do you remove the top engine cover to gain access to the plugs, etc... On my old johnsons and evinrudes, there is simply the lever you turn on the front and it lifts off. I can't find a lever or catch or anything. Take a look at the linked pictures in the first post to see the type of engine. Help Please!

Its hard to see in the picture of the style u have.But.The alum.faceplate may have a knob that if you push and turn will release a spring loaded catch. Then the faceplate removes and you will see one or two other catches that allow the side panel to realease. It will be one long panel that goes around the eng.If thats wrong.look on each side of the eng for releases. That would allow for complete removal. They are usually made to look like the trim that runs around the eng.Or you may have one latch in the rear.Another probability,on the bottom of the alum face piece.Under and rear, put your fingers under it,it may have two ears that you squeeze ,that will release the plate and you may see the other catches. That all said.I had a late fiftys lonestar.Fins and all like a 57 chevy. It had a 40 evin.cable steering .Old VW bucket seats ,and I was proud.Boat was pretty much low maint until ,at my young age like 10-12 found a guy thru out a can of Woolesys Bronze RACINGanti fouling paint.Painted it up ,looking real nice.Next day the bottom turned green. That was my lesson about disimiliar metals and how they react with the alum.then corroding faster than a cotton shirt with battery acid.We did all we could to save her ,painting a rubber type cement on the seems etc.To no avail,it was her last yr.Hope all works out.Mike
