Re: New Rebuilt Starter not working and grinding very loud.

Well, it's time to say thanks to the guys on this forum and I hope I didn't offend anyone when I questioned removing the ring gear so many times. Just like Don S and DHPMarine said, once I pulled the engine and removed the fly wheel (I did it and although is was a bit tricky at times, we got it) and low and behold, a few wacks witha chisel and the ring gear was off. Thanks guys for saving me HUNDREDS of dollars. I am going to go and order a new ring gear monday. Once it's all done, I'll post the results. This board is awesome, and its good to know reliable and honest info is available!

Now remember,,,,the chisel is for removal,,,,heat is for installing the starter ring.

Re: New Rebuilt Starter not working and grinding very loud.

All,

Hate to bring back an old topic but it's very familiar with some twists..I replaced my 85 mercruiser V8 w/ a 99 GM Marine V8 (350) engine and had a machine shop add the ring gear to the flywheel...Also bought one of those small starter motors with wild torque and is secured by 2 : 4 and 3/8 " bolts...My problem is that the motor starts as smooth as silk and quietly nearly all season long...Once the weather gets in the 50's I can always look forward to getting that shrieking grind ....When I do, I stop and drop the starter to inspect both ring gear and starter gear both of which look OK...The bolts however are just slightly bent in the threads...I buy two new bolts, add loctite and torque to specs...The problem is solved for the season...

I have done this every year since I put this new motor in...

Any suggestions...????
