SO, today i chewed all the teeth off the flywheel again, for the 3rd time. I have a 96 5.7 mercruiser. I will be pulling the motor and putting a new gear on it and maybe a new starter bendix, while its out i will be aligning the starter and check the need for shims, and anybody think of anything else i can do to prevent this from happening again? maybe a new starter??? i donno, i had to be towed for the first time today and i was so mad i was ready to pull the plug and call the insurance company(jk)

Is it not engaging when this happens, or is it happening while the engine is turning over?

I have seen a few chewed up flywheels from "kickback" on a motor with timing issues...
