No you won't have to buy new rings now. :)

While you watch, have your hand on the power cord for the drill, so you can unplug it. Sometimes people confuse the cylinder hone for a boring machine. :D
A few strokes up and down, and your done in under a minute!

Drill mounted honing tool (~$30):

Cylinder boring machine (~$40,000):

See the difference? :D

Listen closely.
Do not hone the heads. Hone the cylinders where the pistons are. Don't use acid. Don't use emery cloth. Have your mechanic or whoever use a ball hone and hone the cylinders.

c/6
Hooty

Thanks Hooty, I hear you, I am a newbie at this stuff and thanks to most of you I am learning alot as well as my son. I think we have made just about all the mistakes, but then again you can learn from mistakes.

I admit i was confused concerning the honing of the cylinder walls in order to get a good ring seat and proper compression.

Going out to test the Ebay bought head today and later today will disassemble the original head and look for a hone or let my auto mechanic hone it for me, what ever is the cheapest way to go.

Thanks for your reply and being specific about what type of hone. robert/ryan

You must disassemble the engine, hone the cylinders, wash the engine throughly with Dawn Liquid Detergent and hot water, rinse throughly with hot water, oil the cylinders immediately to prevent rusting and then reassemble.

There are no shortcuts!

c/6
Hooty

Okay, well I put the Ebay head on and took her out for a spin, she seemed to come to plane faster than with the other un- honed head.

I took the chinese compression tester and useing the hose with fitting for plug hole and it gave me a reading of 60psi. The same thing that I got on the other head not yet honed. Then I used the rubber neck attachment and it gave me a reading of 100 psi, same as that for the un- honed head.

To say the least I am sending tester back to China and will get one made in the ole USA if that is possible.
