My mercruiser 140 alpha one gen one requires a new shift cable bellows. I simply want to put that little boot onto the existing cable but don't want to damage the cable or make a mistake doing this. Is there a simple procedure to do this and starting at which end?
thanks

Remove the drive, unhook cable inside boat, remove black slide, threaded tube, white plastic anti-chafe winding from cable near exaust(if installed), unscrew shift cable from housing, pull to the rear untill clear of the boot, R/R boot,

Excellent. I removed the two square set screws in order to take off the black slide. It won't budge. Any ideas on how to remove that piece without breaking it?

pull harder, there are probably burrs on the cable end from the set screws pushing in.

File the burrs down and it will come out. No sense damaging the inside of the cable.

Do you have to remove the brass nut on the bell housing to remove the shift bellow? If so what is the trick with out the special tool?

I did that years ago and still have that tool.... but if you do not have access to a welder, you might find that the long white tube may screw off giving you access to the nut with a regular long socket. They do screw off on some cables.

Of course, to me, if the cable is very old at all, this is a lot of work just to keep an old cable. If there is any doubt as to the condition of the cable, it might be the time to replace it.
