New Shifting problem

So Ive been having problems with my boat of it not going into reverse when shifted, the engine just starts reving up. The other day when I was trying to get it into reverse the boat suddenly went into forward gear. My shifter was all the back in what should be full reverse. Is this a problem with the throttle assembly, or something down in the engine. We've done a visual inspection, and it does not look like any cables are binding.

Outboard 1992 Force 120hp, just recently had a new clutch dog put in the lower unit also..

Is the little shift pin hooked back up. Its on the lower leg back and real easy to over look.

Your talking about the shift pin on the lower unit right? Yea thats connected, we did the adjustment on it and we are positive that its set right. We are thinking its gotta be something with the throttle up by the wheel, since its 20 years old.

Ok what I am talking about is the shift rod that is bent at 90 deg. and connects to the rod that comes out pf the lower leg. Its about mid way up the leg and bellow lower cowl. On the back of lower unit. Between the boat and motor. It is held together by a pin and is easy to forget hooking back up. Shouldn't need any adjusting. Just hook it up and go if that's your problem that is.
