I noticed there is some sealant around the pitot. What should I use to seal the new one?

Would clear rtv be ok?

Sorry for the noob question.

Actually you want to put it into the screw holes too before you put your stainsteel screws back in a small bead around the pitot edges isn't going to hurt either but in the holes especially.

3M 5200 is probably the best. It's a Marine adhesive/sealant and work well above and below the water line.

Funds are tight but I'll look into it....

So clear rtv would be ok though?

Every one swears by this stuff and you'll always have it for many reasons

I would NOT use the rtv.

Even though it looks like it would seal good enough, it just doesn't stick good enough for the long term.

You may see this clear silicone stuff around shower doors or wherever. It looks water-tight, but if you dig your thumbnail under an edge, you can just peel it off.

With 4200 or 5200, you can't. This stuff is tenacious.

Use 4200 for things that you think you 'might' want to remove in the future.

Use 5200 for things that you never plan to remove.

Home Depot or Lowes has one or the other in smaller, 3 or 4oz tubes for under $8. Look in the paint dept, in the glue area.

This is important. Don't try to save a few bucks sealing holes in your transom.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

I just finished transom replacement surgery on my boat, precipitated because a previous owner did a crappy job of sealing holes in the transom with silicone. Silicone/RTV doesn't belong on a boat. 3M 5200 is the stuff to use.

I would use 5200 and nothing else. and get plenty of it in the hole. wipe off the excess and let it cure for a few days before splashing the boat. I wouldn't worry about being able to get it off later, 5200 is a decent adhesive, but you won't have any prob removing something like a speedo pickup or the screws later if you really need to.

For the speedo pitot 4200 is the thing to use.The 5200 bonds so well you may pull gel-coat off with it if you ever need to replace it again.
Fill the screw holes, put the screws in and wipe off whatever squeezes out when you snug the screws down.

Just digging up an old thread but neither 3M 4200/5200 is available near me so I was curious if this would be good enough for reattaching my speedo.
