I just recently purchased a 1967 starcraft arrow. When I got her home I got to work buffing and polishing and waxing. When I tipped the trailer up I heard water run back to the back of the boat. What should my next step be?? starcraft.jpgphoto (4).jpg

I removed screws at the back and began to let water drain.

Re: New Starcraft Arrow Find

Do you know if the boat was kept well covered by the PO? It could be rain water. Hoping for that anyway.

She looks like a nice one.

what do you mean you removed screws? which screws? pix would help.
i fear your next step will be looking for soft spots in the floor where the floor and stringers are rotted. followed by the ever popular remove n replace with us shouting encouragement over your shoulder.

There were three brass screws with rubber washers in a water catch (excuse the lack of technical terms I'm a noob) at the back just infront of the transom. As soon as I undid those and tilted the trailer all of the water began to drain out.

As for the other question, the PO had left it uncovered so many years of rain water should be the cause of the water inside. The floor is feels solid in most places, although in some the fiberglass has some room to be pushed down to the wood underneath. (i used a scrub brush to get some paint out of the way on the floor and can see the wood).

In the removal, how difficult is it to get the top of the boat separated and then put back on later?? THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!

Star craft arrow seats steering wheel and windshield??

Star craft arrow seats steering wheel and windshield??

I just recently purchased a '67 starcraft arrow. The windshield is covered in crazing and the boat came with no seats. The original steering wheel is also damaged due to weathering. Where should I start in replacing the windshield?? How costly would it be to have one made? Does anyone know the original set up of seats in this particular model?

I would like to go with a classic steering wheel. Anyone know where to start looking? Thanks so much! photo (4).jpgstarcraft.jpg

Pulling the cap is about a days work, but you need to place it where you want it till your done. Sounds like your boat is like many vintage boats, rotting due to neglect.. To remove the cap, you need to pull the rub rail, and then you will see your cap-hull junction. I'v never seen a 'glass SC with the cap off so I do not know what type of junction. On my Custom Craft it is a sandwich type junction, and I used an oscilating saw to cut the staples, and then the cap lifted off from the front back.

You can polish out the windshield spiderwebbing.

Matt - your cap lift looks like a gator getting ready to chomp. :)

That's the way to do it, G. After the rub rail is off, you will have a better idea how the cap is secured to the hull.

You can polish out the windshield spiderwebbing.

As long as they are SURFACE scratches, you can probably polish them out. In my experience, vintage windshields have spider cracking IN the windshield, and although when polished they aren't as noticeable they can't be buffed or polished out.

Post some close pix of the windshield showing the cracking you're asking about. From 6 or 7ft away, it doesn't look too bad:

@ the bottom right corner, in this ^^^ pix, it looks like typical vintage windshield spider cracks that aren't usually polished out IMHO.

Might try to give the mob a chance to respond before you start a 2nd thread for the same boat:

That way as you get replies & etc you won't have 3 separate discussions running about the same thing. Seats & windshield are likely to come up in either of the other 2 threads.

The Starcraft brochures may have a pix of your interior:

Not a big deal really, but you can ask a Moderator to combine them for you, if you'd like.

I did try polishing them out and they seem to be too deep as you had mentioned jbcurtt00.

Re: Star craft arrow seats steering wheel and windshield??

Welcome to the 'looking for a parts/donor boat' club. That is how many solve the problem. Many of us scour CL daily looking for the parts & pieces we need to finish a project boat. Often those parts come w/ the entire boat & trailer too...

Or might try 1 or 2 of the DIY windshield methods:

1. @iboats

2. not iboats

3. not iboats

Or 1 of the replacement windshield places:

Re: Star craft arrow seats steering wheel and windshield??

JB, you THE MAN. thaks for consolidating all those in one place.

Gahbreel, he's dead on. the cost of restoring something EXACTLY like original can be astronomical. the cost of restoring it with period-correct, but maybe not exactly factory spec, bits acquired with a rotting glasser attached to them can be very cheap indeed. remember that many folks have those in backyard and wouldn't mind turning em into cash but don't realize that someone might want it for parts....they are used to the average American who can't inflate a flat tire on a bike (no hyperbole there....i've just been buying used bikes on CL) and think they'd have to fix it up to sell it. an ad on CL seeking glassers with rotting floor and/or no title can be very profitable, specially as it's free. i found an engine donor in one day for 650 this way, and literally took every piece of metal off it before it went to the landfill.

have you checked the "starcraft parts" thread for st wheel?

Re: Star craft arrow seats steering wheel and windshield??

Huge blessing today! I was talking to a friend about the boat and he knew of someone that had an old 64 sea sprite sitting on some property he had just purchased and is letting me take whatever I want/need for free! Getting perfect condition cleats/ lights windshield horn and steering wheel! I was realizing too that trying to get an exact like the original would be very costly. Thank you so so much for your help. Its awesome to have knowledgable and experienced people like you guys to ask these questions to.

sea sprite.jpg

Here is the sea sprite from today. Id say that windshield is pretty stinking close---and being free im more than happy to make the exception that it isn't original..no cracks or anything, just dusty. The part of me that loves old boats wants to bring this one home too. He offered to let me take it but I dont have room right now. It is full of weeds and water though, that helped the heart soreness--just a little though.

In Arkansas, you might even LIKE the added vent window in the center....... To get it to 'fit' or 'look' right, you might push/pull the outer corners a bit, but NOT much. You don't want to stress the new to you vintage plexi....

G - That shield very much resembles what was used on some Jupiter models. The vent will be very welcome on a hot summer day. :)

Re: Star craft arrow seats steering wheel and windshield??

Did you try to wet sand the windshield? You can start with maybe 1000 grit wet sandpaper....and then progressively go up to 2000 or so. The windshield will become hazy when you first start sanding, but will clear up as you use the finer and finer grit.

I've cleaned up some nasty scratched/hazed headlights using the wet sand technique. It can be scary when you first start sanding the deep stuff out cause it really hazes lens(windshield), but when it's done it looks great.

Re: New Starcraft Arrow Find

if you do that, finish it out with some 3M Finesse-It (avail at auto body supply stores) on a wool pad on a buffer (just hit switch momentarily, you don't want to heat things up), and then put some sort of protectant on it.....it will look like new. just mask/cover everything in the area you don't want finesse-it slung onto and wear goggles.
