Re: New Starcraft Arrow Find

So I went out and began working on removing the steering wheel from the sea sprite to use on my arrow....the center cracked out while I was doing so :( back to searching for a steering wheel. Good news is the windshield will be removed by this weekend and Ill get to work placing it on my starcraft!

Vintage steering wheels look nice, vintage steering systems can be updated w/ new pulley's & cable, but before spending much on a vintage wheel, know what your system needs to be in good operating order & safe. Then what kind of an attachment its hub uses, so you'll get a wheel that will fit your system.

If the pulleys & cable need to be replaced, fully inspect the steering hub assembly. If it's rough, you might consider updating the system to a TeleFlex system. Many are under $125 & that used to include a steering wheel. Perhaps a less then FANTASTIC wheel, but a modern system would probably take a wider range of wheels.

Iboats carries a wide variety....

Welllll I got the windshield off of the sea sprite and began working on getting it put on my starcraft, but quickly realized that it is about an inch wide on either side of the mounting space :( does anyone know how much it might cost to have a glass company bend a plexi windshield for me I could just use the old as a template...

Is that the Sea Sprite W/S on the Arrow? It looks to fit OK in the pics. Is the mounting area flat or raised?

No, that is the original windshield. The sea sprite is sitting on the garage floor

I think the first step in fixing those cracks is to check the transom. Cracks like those point to a weak/rotted transom.

On the windshield, I was mixing yours up with another thread.

If you are able to CAREFULLY cut the Sea Sprite windshield, you can take a 2" strip out of the exact center of the w/s and put an 'H' strip of aluminum channel between them, or a 'T'........ carefully riveting thru the w/s.......

If I can find the thread reference for someone doing similarly, I'll be back & post it here...........

Re: Star craft arrow seats steering wheel and windshield??

Okay, so I've done a decent amount of work inside and on the floor, but the transom is my next big job. What is the best, most effective, "easiest" way to go about replacing a transom with wood rot? Sorry for dropping off the face of the earth for a while, I'm a senior in college and haven't had a ton of time to get in on the boat.

Re: New Starcraft Arrow Find

remove corner caps and transom cap strip. remove bolts and drill out any rivets. crawl up under splashwell with 2 big prybars (oak 1x2 worked well for me). lever old transom out, working first one side and then the other......it will try to slip back but with each "pry", it will overall work a little higher and eventually will come free. if you have a hoist or comealong, you could just hoist it out from above but the prying is simpler. you want to try to get old one out as intact as possible so you can use it for template and not have to guessitimate more than needed when making the new one. new ones are made from two layers of '3/4"' (actually 23/32 or so these days) marine or exterior ply glued together to make 1.5" or so. beyond that, just read anyone's thread as i think we've all had to do this job.
