This is my first boat. It's a 14ft Starcraft (Arrow,i think?).The GOOD-It came with a trailer,Mercury controls and was delivered for $150-.It has new seats(4 years ago) that fold out and have underside storage. The BAD-the transom wood is WET PULP!Would a pourable transom be a good idea?I really want to save the boat,it's in nice shape otherwise. Also, how can i find the exact year and model? Thanks

Re: New Starcraft,need help!

you came to the right place. the reality is that boat has a 99.9% chance of needing a deck, transom and stringers. im assuming its fiberglass by the looks of it. fiberglass is a tad bit more difficult than aluminum starcrafts, but there are plenty of glass projects around here for you to learn from.

to answer your question, one pourable option is seacast. ive never used it, so i cant say much about it.

The deck/floor is SUPER straight and ROCK SOLID!There is NO flex or soft spots, only the transom.

First of all, that's great looking boat and should give you many hours of fun. As to your question, the only one that can answer it is YOU. In order to have peace of mind, the deck should be pulled up and the stringers "biopsied" with a small drill bit to determine what shape the stringers are in. If the drill chips come out wet and mushy, you'll need to dig further. If they're dry count yourself lucky and reseal the holes. If you're having doubts at this point, join the club....but the boat's worth the effort!

As to the transom, I went through the same qualms with my Skagit but finally tore the transom out completely. Good thing too, as I found that the previous owner had drilled several holes to mount a transponder THROUGH THE HULL, then sealed them with bathtub calk. Combined with age no wonder the transom rotted.

While checking on Seacast, I found at least two other products that were a lot less expensive....by about half. I don't recall their names, but Google "pourable transom" or "pour transom" and you'll find them.:D

Edit: Your post beat mine! Glad to hear the deck is solid. One of the names was Nida Core I believe. Someone will chime in with the correct spelling.

Re: New Starcraft,need help!

Howdy Patriot welcome to iboats and the Starcraft club . That is a good lookin boat early to mid sixties by the windshield as they prettymuch went to flat windshields around 67. The bad news is you really need to pull the cap and redo the trnsom with wood . The good news is if you do it right this time you shouldnt have to do it again in your lifetime :D. The deck in my Aluminum Starcraft was quite solid but I am glad I yanked it as some YAHOO who owned it before me decided to put aftermarket wood stringers in it ( Aluminum ones dont have wood stringers ) . They went to all the trouble to screw them through the hull which I may not hve noticed if I hadnt pulled the deck out . You can do the seacast but you still have to get the old transom out first and once your that far into it replcing it with wood isnt that bad. Granted it is alot easier to do a trnsom on an aluminum one . What part of the country are you in as that boat looks familliar. You can add your location to your profile using the user cp in the upper left corner of the screen and going in and editing your profile :D.

Re: New Starcraft,need help!

I am lening towards it being an Arrow . The only other glass boats in those years were the stinger which was more of a speedboat, The American which didnt have lapstrake sides and the Capri which was a trihull desighn. So that would make yours a 73 Arrow.
