for my set up. '75, 165 L6.

how important is it for me to replace the starter bolts with new?

i've read about them having knurling on them.

i ordered them from my local merc. dealer. however, he didn't order them (why, i don't know), but had one in stock. the long one. so i still don't have a replacement for the short one. the long one also don't have knurling.

will i be giving myself trouble if i don't replace either of them, or only one?

it's an engine pull to replace them.

my goal is R&Ring the oil pan that has a leak in it.

Re: new starter bolts?

I don't think I would want stainless bolts in an aluminum starter housing. Especially on a salt water boat. That would cause almost instant corrosion and probably prevent ever getting the bolts out again. The problem is bad enough with steel bolts.

As far as if they are needed. Well, it's an engine pull to replace. Do you feel lucky?
If have a coin here, you want heads or tails?
You can get starter bolts at most auto parts stores.

no! i just ain't the lucky type i don't think.

the way i get it, there's always doubt.

i take it starter bolts don't have anything perticularly marine about them.
i'll check out the local auto parts store...

any comments on why the oem long bolt don't have knurling on the bolt. i was under the understanding they all had knurling. maybe not. but it has a real long head (drive)... merc. dealer says it's the right part number.

thanks for the heads up friends..

Re: new starter bolts? (update)

up date.

took the oem long bolt only back to the dealer and told him i was unhappy about the bolt not having knurling. he happily (maybe) took it back and refunded me.

used new starter bolts from napa, w/ knurling.

good thing was, the starter can be R&Red w/o engine removal... :D that made me happy.

thanks again for the comments folks..
