ok, heres the deal.....

i replaced the starter on my 1977 Johnson 70HP Three Cylinder. when i cranked the motor the initial time after starter installation, nothing happened. so, i raise the shaft on the starter and put the bendix on the flywheel. when that happened, the motor was missing and sparks were flying from the flywheel. keep in mind these were electrical sparks and not friction sparks. has anyone seen anything like this? can anyone give some advice?

sounds like you don't have a good ground on the starter motor to the block. it is grounding thru the flywheel and bendix. that is my guess. the reason i say this, is initially nothing happened. you raised the bendix, to the flywheel, which grounded the starter, for it to operate.

yeah that is what i thought, there is no ground wire from the starter, just a hot. so i am assuming the starter is grounding thru the block. any suggestions on how to check this or on how to effectively ground the starter?

If it is a ground issue you can simply put a jumper cable from the starter body to your battery negative (-) terminal and if everything works like normal its time to clean your grounds. Probably a good thing to do anyway if it has not been done lately.

I have a funny feeling that you needlessly replaced your starter, which is often done. More times than not, the problem is in the wiring or wiring connection. Take them all off and polish them until they shine, then retighten. Check all segments of wiring for nicks, cuts, abrasions, or 'crunching' when you flex it. Sure signs of rot. If you have access to a DVM, voltage drop testing is an ideal way to find faulty segments of wiring or faulty components.
