I recently replaced the trigger and stator on my 1985 Mercury 150 Black Max.
They were in dire need of replacement because much of the insulation was peeling away. Prior to replacing them the engine wouldn't even get the boat up on plane and my max spped was probably 10 knots and it was obvious it wasn't firing on all 6 cylinders.
After I replaced the stator and trigger, I fired it up in the driveway and noticed a remarkable difference in the way the engine ran, particularly above 2500 RPM. It sounded great and I assumed the problem was solved.
However, once I put it in the water and got it in gear it still wasn't firing on all 6 cylinders....it got up on plane better than it ever has but once you throttle back the engine dies and it's very hard to get restarted. My auto mechanic friend who was with me said that was because the plugs are getting fouled up by oil injecting into the cylinder and not burning because there is no spark.
So, what's next....the switch boxes....how common is it that these parts fail? And, if I do replace them and still don't have fire, what would cause that?
Thanks in advance!!!
