Looking for some advice on a new steering system for my 1987 (crossflow) 90hp johnson on a 17' welded aluminum bass boat.

would this be a good system:

http://www.iboats.com/Teleflex-Safe...40642753--**********.660427039--view_id.40298

even though it says for boats WITH power steering?

Any advice would be great, if this is good fit or for another teleflex model.

I am replacing the current rotary setup because there is a decent amount of play in the wheel and quite a bit of resistance in the cable, even with the motor detached from the cable.

Yup that is what you want, I have run for quite a few years wioth no probelms at all, those are standard equipment on most new boats and are generally bullit proof.

Just need to measure right and order, from the steering wheel to the gunnel, then to the transom, then to the engine in straight lines, you will eb happy with.

I replaced a rack system and was amazed how much better this was.

It's pretty much the industry standard steering kit. Has everything you'll need. Just get the cable the right length.

Thanks everyone, measured the boat and went with the 13' option. Looking forward to some better, easier steering.
