Well, my newer boat has pretty chipped up decals on the sterndrive. I was lookin to get a new set but... the transom s/n and drive s/n are stamped into these decals. What have you guys done when changing decals? Just write them down and forget about transferring them to the new? Or does someone have a way to put the numbers on the new? Let me know, thanks.

Re: New Sterndrive Decals...

You can get yourself a set of metal stamps and transfer the letter/numbers into the new decal.
Acomplete set of letters and numbers can be had for less than 30 dollars. Many cheaper sets are availiable thru places like harbor freight, just make sure you do not stamp anything that has been hardened (steel) as they are made for soft steel and other materials. If you know anyone that works at a machine/die shop they probably have a set and you might be able to borrow them. I am curious, where are you getting the decals? Mine are in poor condition and that might be a nice spruce up.

I thought about a punch set... but I don't want to deform the decals too much. Might have to practice on the old decals. I am thinking I would stamp them, then install? I am looking at ebay. Just type "mercruiser decals". Alpha one gen one whole set $23 shipped. Gen 2's are a little more.

Looking closely at what is left of mine, they appear to be stamped. You will control how hard you hit them with your hammer, in that decal material it won't take much of a hit to make the impression. Thanks for the ebay info.

with nothing but good wishes, you are being silly... the stamping likely goes through the decal into the metal below, just put the new on and be done with it. You could even put the new sticker over the old..... honestly, what use is that number to you anyhow... only real use is theft recovery and that only works if you have it recorded AND the thief doesn't destroy the stamping
