New thermostat question.

I finally took out the stuck open thermostat out and put in a new one. I started the motor and let it run for at least 10 mins the thermostat did not open. The gauge read about 90F and I don't understand why the engine is not warming up. I only ran it on land with the water ears on. Is this ok? Will it take running on the water with a load to warm up properly?

Re: New thermostat question.

your gauge maybe wrong. if it is a force motor you need to put it in the water to get good flow.

Did you put the thermostat in the way you took it out?

Thanks for the replies. I did put the thermo the way it was spec'ed to go in and I touched the head near the thermo and I was not hot. It seemed the the gauge works. I just had the engine get too hot before I put in the new thermo and the gauge worked fine.

Re: New thermostat question.

Test the new thermostat in a pan.Start it in cool water then heat it up.After it gets hot it should open. After it opens then add cool water to see if it closes. If it checks out then make sure the thermo is in right. Is the seat and seal good.Any corrosion or poor seal will allow water thru and allow it to cool.Is it the right thermo?J

Re: New thermostat question.

Force engines use either a 110 or 130* thermostat. The engine is only warm for a minute before the thermostat opens and then it runs fairly cool.
Try this.

Pull the cowl off. As soon as you start the engine, go and put your hand on the exhaust box. It will start to get hot fairly rapidly but, as soon as the thermostat opens, it will get cool to the touch. If this happens, you know your thermostat is working.
