Hi folks,
I am not new to boating, as I have had about 4 or 5 throughout my life, but all were under 18 ft and outboards. My dad and me just got a good deal on a 1989 Carver Montego 2357 (oal about 26). We actually plan to go and pick it up this week. Now, I must admit I am a little intimidated. I guess I'm just used to a boat I could easily trailer and service myself.
This boat has been sitting for a few years on blocks, and although the owner stated everything work(ed) fine, I have just been trying to prepare/educate myself for anything we might encounter, beyond needing a good cleaning. First thing I did was get the manual and try to get familiar with the engine. It's a volvo penta aq271c with the duo prop outdrive. I guess, basically, I want to try and run all the systems step by step and see what might be wrong...hopefully not much. As far as the engine, my biggest fear is doing damage. To be honest the manual I got isnt very helpful, unless I need to do an actual overhaul or part replacement. What I want to do, for starters, is just get everything to the point where I can safely attempt to start it and see if it runs. What comes to mind is replacing the oil in the engine and lower unit, Checking the impellers, the pumps, the blowers, the batteries, etc etc. I mean, basics I am used to with dealing with outboards. But this is all new to me. Like, could I use rabbit ears to run it on land? What kind of stuff should I have on hand? What fluids do I need? How best do I winterize it?The manual doesnt seem to even tell me quantities and weights and such. Ah. I am sure next year, this time, I will be much more confident and assured with my knowldege and competence, but right now, Im not gonna get ahead of myself and am just gonna take it step by step. So, basically, any advice would be greatly appreciated as to the first general steps, and we'll take it from there. Think of this posting as the beginning of a beautiful relationship. lol. as I am sure I will be back with many more questions.
