Actually, this style was also built in 52. In 53, the QD introduced the roto-grip tiller handle/throttle and was also the last year of the "fins forward" shroud. I think 53 also introduced the shifter on the side, versus the front like BK's 51 model here. I could be mistaken about that though.
I love the style of the first QD's though. It was a huge breakthrough for the designs of Johnson outboards before other Johnsons were and also was the first model (1949)with a remote tank as well as a full gear shift. Evinrude introduced these a year later on the '50 Fastwin 14hp
