nice boat! i really like the apple green, far better then the 70s avocado.

Transom is starting to separate but it still seemed pretty sturdy. you're an optimist. that thing looks terrible, and that's the top rather than down under the splashwell where the REAL rot occurs. an 85hp OMC will weigh about 300. i wouldn't hang anything bigger than a 25hp on it til you do transom. it needs to be replaced and it;'s a lot easier to do at same time as floors. i don't think there is a more safety-critical item on your boat than having a transom that won't fall off.

I agree with all of barato2's comments about the transom. Too many times guys with new to them tinnies post about cracked splashwells. 10 times out of 10 it's due to a rotted transom which leads to the splashwell bearing the brunt of the motors weight and power. Transom R/R is one of the easiest things to do on a Starcraft. Your SS looks to be decent shape and can only be made better. Welcome to the Starmada, Nate.

Thanks for the continued help everyone. I decided to try and tackle the transom tonight. Got all but two of the bolts out which I will need a helper to hold and keep from spinning. One problem I ran into is how do you get out the hose sleeves that are on each side of the motor plate? Do you just smash/cut/muscle them out? I was thinking of taking a bimetal blade and cutting off the back side of the round over then try to smash it through to the back. Can you get replacements for these if they get ruined?

I don't have a whole lot of time with being in grad school so I think I'll just do the transom first, try and get a motor running then go fishing a few times before I redo the floor and repaint the outside. The floor is really bad. Its very soft and snaps and crackles with all my climbing in and out but I think the family can just tread lightly until I can get to it.

Yup, those drain tubes, you can smash em out, cut em out, whatever you like. You'll have to replace those anyhow;)

i collapsed mine by tapping around the outer edge with a hammer and flat blade screwdriver, then used cutoff wheel to remove the "lip" portion, then drove em forward through the transom enough that they were clear of the outer alum skin. done.

and yes, you can either buy comm'ly made replacements or make em yourself fairly easily. sevl of the guys on here (sorry, don't recall who) posted great how-to pix and descrip.

All right, got the transom out. Thanks for the pointers on those sleeves. I really wanted to go after the floor but my wife reminded me we wanted to be out fishing over memorial day and suggested we wait. Shes probably right as usual. The boat drew first blood as I was trying to clean up the splash well and my knuckles slipped into the sharp aluminum edge where the transom was.

I couldn't set aside my impulsiveness and I bought the evinrude 85hp. I ordered a OEM Service Manual, Trailer Lights, Carb Repair Kit x 2, Teleflex Steering cable and some Sea Foam.

Whats the trick to hoisting the motor on and off. My back still hurts from lifting it into the truck yesterday with the help of the seller. I don't know if I have any strong beams in the garage so I think im going to put together a sturdy frame and then use a block and tackle to hoist the engine.

nice looking SS, its good your changing out that transom. You can rent an engine hoist or go the block & tackle route. Lots of fellas on here have built engine stands, sure helps if you have work to do on the outboard.

If you have a HF 20% coupon you can get a 4000Lb winch puller for less than $14.50 till the end of the month :D

Nate--
i know some of our less civilized bretheren have made a tempo gantry with two 10' stepladders and a double thickness of 2x12 laid across the tops. hang a come-along or chain hoist and you're good to go. ladders end up essentially unused so if you want to return one right afterwards, no one will grumble.

if you go the cherry picker route, be sure the hyd oil is full and it;'s working right before you commence to hoist. don't ask how i know this.

I have two stepladders and lots of come alongside. Maybe I'll give that a go. I got a new transom in last night. Used some exterior ply and raka epoxy. My Pre drilled holes didn't line up so I had to drill new ones and just used some exterior silicon caulk with the bolts. I see mentions of the 3m 5200 (I think) that I should buy and use instead. Old transom was bowed out 3/4 inch and broke the knee brace top tabs and cracked the splashwell a little.

Somebody on here did a really bang up knee brace repair using aluminum angle but I'll be darned if I can find the thread.

So how do I replace the sleeves (or whatever they are called) that I tore out of the old transom? I hear I can get replacements here on iboats but I dont even know what they are called to find them. EZ I'll keep my eyes out for the knee brace repair. I have a bunch of aluminum angle that I should be able to use for reinforcement.

The Evinrude 85hp is going to take some time to repair and I needed a kicker/trolling motor so I picked up an older honda 8hp 4 stroke. Hope to take it for a test run tonight before the hitting Strawberry Reservoir for memorial weekend.

you could fish all season with just that 8hp. be careful about how you set it down so it doesn't puke oil.

i think you can get transom drains commercially, and someone here made some nice ones from scratch

Drain tubes, Nate. Right here on iboats

I can't remember who fixed the knee braces with angle either.

I used the plastic drain tubes and with liberal application of 5200 they worked just dandy.

Re: New to boating just purchased a 1976 16' Super Sport

I ended up taking the boat for a spin on Lake Powell over the memorial day weekend. Wind was crazy until Monday but then it was nearly glass. I turned on the bilge after getting out a little ways and I was pumping lots of water. Then the motor died and it took a while to get it started and It would die when I tried to slow to idle or change gears. It was a bit scary as I had the boat full of 4 kids and 3 adults. Managed to get back to shore and I realized I hadn't plugged up all the holes in the transom that were drilled for the old motor!

I had some duck tape handy and a screw and was able to cover the holes with duck tape and also got the motor running better by adjust a carb mix screw?

The duck tape held and fiddling with the carb screw managed to keep the motor idling. We trolled for a bit and I landed a Stripped Bass.

Then we found a cove and went swimming.

Wife, kids and relatives had fun but I was stressed out with the image of us sinking. Thinking non stop about boating and fixing this little tinnie up and getting out again this weekend. Too bad school and work get in the way. I can see this will be a way for us to spend lots of quality family time together.

OK so a few questions for all of you. The four stroke 8hp honda weighs about 100lbs and the evinrude 85hp weighs 300+ lbs
Can I safely hang both of these off the transom? Seems like a lot of weight?

What do you think of something like this for a mounting plate for the outboard? Would never rot or compress like wood.

But it really wouldn't be hard to cut and cover a piece of ply in epoxy and paint.

Just finished rebuilding the carbs on the evinrude. Broke a retainer clip and cut a stubborn hose that wouldn't come off the tee. Need to get those parts before I can fire up the big 85hp. Im nervous that it wont run.

Whats the cheapest place for gluv-it? or 5200 for that matter.

Well I'm glad that the bilge pump worked, and that you were able to get the motor running again.

Stressful stuff for sure...normally we opt for test runs with a buddy that can swim prior to taking out the kids.

No problem hanging the 85hp and the kicker, just make sure to locate some weight amidships and in the bow to keep the boat sitting as level as you possible at rest. Planed out it will not be a problem, since the Johnson will lift the whole stern up on top of the water.

I say thumbs up on the cutting board, in fact I recently bolted one on my SS between the stern and my motor bracket.

UV damage will be the only real concern, a minor one hopefully.:)

Got the Evinrude carbs rebuilt, hoisted the motor up on a homemade stand (which tipped over with the motor attached!), I then bolted into the header of the garage and used the come along attached to the garage header. Worked much better.

Got the motor back on put it on muffs and attempted a start. No luck. Inspected it some more and found one of the wires going to the coils had been pinched and cut clean through when the motor fell. I soldered it back together and was able to get it started. No water from the pee hole but after fishing a small stick in the hole found it was just clogged a bit. Put in a new steering cable and box, the old one was rusted solid.

Took the boat out on Wednesday after rebuilding the carbs and putting in a new steering cable. The 85hp evinrude ran awesome except for the first time I tried to crank it over on the water and the key twisted right off!?

I just used my car key to push the broken bit in and turn the cylinder. Cranked then started up just fine. Went faster then I imagined. In fact too fast for comfort. We were skipping across the water.

I dont have a kicker bracket yet and am wondering if I can get away without one? What is the purpose of the bracket? I think there is enough space if I use a piece of ply that extends a little above the transom cutout. Here is a pic of the two motors. I straighted out the kicker and moved it to the left a bit and up.

The stern was very low in the water with the weight of the two gas tanks, battery, 85hp evinrude and 8hp honda 4 stroke.

I was able to tilt the kicker up and going WOT it only slightly dragged.

What can I do to get weight forward? I drilled out the rivets on the front bow piece and put the anchors in there.

Has anyone hinged the bow seats so you can lift the lid for storage? I'm in need of storage with my 3 kids and all the gear.

On Saturday we took the boat out again in real windy conditions (gusting to 30mph), Water was coming in through the drain tubes and sometimes over the transom with the waves. Had to run the bilge a lot. It was not pleasant but we ended up going through the full tank of gas on the 85hp just cruising around . Definitely not as economical as the 8hp.

I ordered a new ignition switch since the old one was really needing to be replaced. The new one arrived Saturday but its a 6 terminal push to choke while the old ignition switch is a 5 terminal with a separate switch to choke. Is it possible to just bypass the switch and use the 6 terminal? I'm still trying to figure how to wire it.

So some questions I need guidance on....
1. How do I move weight forward or reduce weight at the back? See question 4. When I was the only one in the boat and waiting at the dock the skeg ended up touching the ground.
2. Can I replace the 5 terminal switch with a 6 terminal push to choke ignition.
3. Do I need a kicker bracket?
4. Hinged Bow Seats for Storage? ( I like the ski locker idea for storage as well ) U shaped opening is just too difficult to get big heavy things in and out.

Re: New to boating just purchased a 1976 16' Super Sport

Unfortunately I think the kicker is the biggest issue. The 85 V4 is the max motor on there so pretty much anything else hanging back there has you too weighted down. Is the kicker just for emergencies? or will you actually use it for fishing and what not? On an open bow, I don't have any good ideas for moving weight forward. When I had my 16' closed bow I moved a 12 gallon fuel tank up under the bow but that wouldn't work well on an open bow.

With your kicker mounted on the transom next to the 85, can the 85 still have it's full turning space from side to side? Can the kicker? If it works, go for it. I think others have done it. The V4 is a little wider though than some of the in-line motors and maybe that's what the others were using.

I can see no reason why you wouldn't be able to use that new push in ignition switch to replace your old one and the toggle. They do exactly the same thing.

I put hinged bow storage in mine
