Hi all. This is my very first post for a soon-to-be first time boat owner so I thought I?d ask the forum their opinion on the boat we?re looking at.

First off, why are we getting into boating? We?re a family of 6 that loves the outdoors. My teenagers especially want a boat for water sports fun and cruising around. We live about 5 minutes from a river (no water sports but cruising and hanging out on sandbars is lots of fun) and about 45 minutes from a lake for the water sports (we want to tube, water ski, and my teens and I plan to learn to wakeboard). Other considerations: I intend to keep the boat in the garage when not in use and my budget is around $20k (we can afford more, but I don?t want to spend any more than I have to for something we really only get use out of 5 months of the year).

After looking at what?s available in our area and to stay within our self-imposed budget, we settled on comparisons of the Bayliner 185 and the Glastron 185 (also thought about Larson & Sea Ray but no dealers in the area). Why not bigger? Again, one of the things I need to be able to do is garage this boat; I could, perhaps, look at the 195 but I think the 205 is just too big. Anyway, my thought is I have 4 kids; 2 teens and 2 little ones by the time my little ones are big enough to take up much room; my 2 teens are long gone to college and will only come around to borrow the boat from Dad to go with their friends (which I will have no problem with; I was there once too). I also thought about used and have looked extensively but what?s available in our area is limited in this class and everything has the 3.0 L. none have the 4.3L (which seems odd but probably not a coincidence, more people happier with more HP?).

After being in and out of both boats this weekend; I hands down prefer the slightly more expensive Glastron (sorry Bayliner owners); each has its pluses/minuses but for my and my wife, the Glastron just felt like a more finished boat. For us, the higher price point is worth the cost plus I truly like the fact that these boats are made in Minnesota..close to home and not Mexico (again not trying to offend anyone).

So the boat we liked best was the 2008 Glastron 185 with XL package, upgraded trailer, Volvo Penta 4.3 GL with snap covers and wakeboard tower; the MSRP on Glastron?s webpage is around $26k. The dealer was selling for $25k + tax & lic. After being in and out of the boat and showing interest; we left without making an offer but the salesman came out the door to us as we were leaving and said the owner was willing to sell it to us for $24 k plus a tube/ski package (essentially tube, tube rope, skis, ski ropes, and 5 life jackets?.maybe around a $500 package) + tax & lic. Not bad, but I just couldn?t pull the trigger right then and there. The cost was more than I wanted to spend and I?m troubled by a few things that I could use some advice on:

1. Fair price? We were surprised to have the salesman come out to us like that as we were leaving?I got the impression they were motivated to sell the boat and were hoping to get a sale out of me that day.

2. The wakeboard tower? Do I really need this thing? It adds about $2k to my total costs and not sure it?s worth the money (although I could afford it). Yes, my teens (and I) want to learn to wakeboard; but I?ve also read that a tower isn?t necessary unless you?re into doing tricks, etc?I don?t see myself or the teens doing any flips on a board anytime soon (would kill their Mom!). I also see some headache with putting it up/down when garaging and worry about clearance from time to time on lower bridges on the river.

3. 4.3L or 3.0L? I can get into the very same boat with the 3.0L minus the wakeboard for somewhere in the $19k range (attractive because below my budget)?.is the 4.3L really worth it at the end of the day? My thoughts for my family size and what we want to do is YES! I do not want to talk myself out of the 4.3 to save money; but I am willing to hear out someone with a different opinion (especially if I can do all I want to do just as well with the 3.0).

4. The Volvo motor. How does it compare to the Merc (maintenance-wise etc.). Merc is a well-known name; I?m much less familiar with the Volvo. How about winterizing the Volvo Penta? A lot of work that?s worth taking to the dealer to do? Or should I be able to do it myself with no real issues?

Finally, I believe that I can do a little better on that first offer price. If most readers opine that the wakeboard tower and 4.3L are necessities for what I?ve described my family and I want to do; than I?m seriously considering going back with an offer of $22k plus bimini top (really the only thing this boat doesn?t have), a wakeboard, and anchor/rope.

Wow, sorry so long! If you can?t tell?.I tend to over think things (drives my lovely wife crazy sometimes!)?.anyway, thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts / advice; I greatly appreciate it!

Hard to believe that you can't find used boats in your area, they are plenty around me. I would definately explore the used route further, you are going to get so much more for your money. Also, dealers are desperate to sell boats right now you need to really put the screws to them if you still decide to buy new. You only need the wakeboard tower if you are really going to be wakeboarding. For skiing and tubing you will not need it. You will be happier with the 4.3 than the 3.0, even though I have had two 3.0's and was very happy with both. I don't see much difference between the Volvo's and the Merc's, both are good quality.

Welcome to iBoats and the world of boating. You will find just about everything here. Do you really want brad new? Some people do and some, it doesn't matter to them. I for one bought a 1 year old boat w/ 30 hours for about 8K under what the new ones sell for. I let the first owner take the depreciation hit that comes with a brand new boat. I'd go with the 4.3L as you will want a little more HP for the watersports. When you are figuring out if you can keep it in your garage, make sure you account for the trailered length as well. I also see lots of people wakeboard without a tower and it will proably have to come down to load in your garage.

I'll throw my $.02 in here.

I think the wake board tower is a must. You looking to go into a 18 ft. boat. Not really a small boat, however when you pack in 6 people, plus gear for the day it can feel that way. Th tower gives you a steady platform to tow from, but also provides you with a handy place to store wakeboards and skies when not in use.

You also mentioned using the boat for fun on sand bars and such. You can get speakers that mount to the tower so they are easier to hear when your out of the boat. Just a thought there.

As far as fitting it in your garage, someone else mentioned the length of the trailer, have you considered a swing away tongue on it?

I believe the 4.3 is going to be a better option. It will be nice to have a little extra horse power in reserve when it's choppy out, especially with 4 adults, and two little ones. The fuel consumption won't be that much more either.

I do believe you can do better on the price that the salesman offered. The fact that he approached you with an offer indicates that they do want to move this boat. I think your offer of 22k plus wanting the extras would be fair, however they may counter back in the area of $23,500 out the door. Prolly still a good price. Good luck let us know how it turns out.

I would maybe try another "stop in and look" trip with a turn and walk out. that might really get the salesman wanting to get this thing hitched up to your truck. the price might come down a little more since Im sure his manager will be telling him that you really want this boat.

Re: New to Boating Questions

Lots of boat sales are impulse buys. Many nearly new boats are sitting in garages everywhere because after the second or third time out, people realized there are maintenace issues, costs, etc. that they don't want to deal with.
I agree with bhammer, why should you take that 20-25% initial depreciation on arig when a perfectly good used one would be fine. Also, you did not say that you had previous experience. Just suppose things don't work out. Unloading a used boat is a lot easier hit than unloading a new one.
Try iboats used boats, Boat Trader or even Craigslist. Also, I could not tell you if that is a good buy in your area. Where I live in West Central Florida there are literally hundreds of dealers, all wanting to sell boats. Both new and used. As mentioned, it is definitely a buyers market. The rig you are after is popular. There should be no problem finding others like it. If it were me, and I just got back in the market several months ago, I would spend some time just looking and comparing. Maybe a boat show or two...even if you have to travel a bit. Also if Tashasdaddy has not chimed in yet, he has an effective guide to use to narrow size, options, etc.
But anyway, personally, I was miserable for the couple of years that I was without a boat. I think that's my sanity I'm starting to get back...:p

Re: New to Boating Questions

I bought the exact same boat you are looking at so I'll weigh in.
For comparison mine was $20K plus $465 for the bimini plus $595 dealer prep (I hate this with cars but it sounds like the boat dealers do a lot more than remove the plastic on the seats) plus freight. We also bought the "value pack" with vests, tube, ski etc. since we haven't had a boat in a long time. We signed our agreement at a boat show in January and got a 4 year extended warranty on the 4.3 Volvo for free.

Just like you it MUST fit in our garage (IIRC the 185GT is 20.5' on trailer with the folding tongue) so we were limited on size and by towing capacity.
With all the bad economic news I would think dealers are a bit nervous about selling boats so I would think 22-23K with the tower would get you there plus the extras.

The size limitation has it's drawbacks. This hull is really a 17 (.5?) footer, they count the swim platform. 6 is about the most the boat holds comfortably. Therefore, based on your desired usage and for the storage reasons mentioned earlier I think the tower is a good idea. We use the swim platform to strap down our 3 person tube and deflate it as soon as we are done with it.
With the load you're talking about the Volvo 4.3 is over propped. It comes with a 14.2 by 23. I just put a 4 blade 21 pitch on mine with good results. See if the dealer will throw in a 21 pitch prop.

We really like the boat and it's the right boat for the 4 of us.
Good luck in your decision. Let us know how it turns out.

Just reread your post. Good point about the tower and the garage and towing. Also, for your plans I think the 4.3 is the way to go. Also, make sure they bolt through the front bimini brackets. Experience talking.

Re: New to Boating Questions

Hi all, thanks for all of the great advice! The boat we're considering comes with a swing-away tongue, so it would fit in the garage (snug, but fits). I appreciate everyone's thoughts on the 4.3L; I think that's the right motor for us; also I didn't consider the tower for storing skis, boards, and adding speakers....great ideas for creating more room and fun on the sand bars (thx Splat!). The towers just look strange to me. However, sounds like the tower and the 4.3L are the right buys over the long-run

This will be our first boat and I'm in no way in a hurry to buy....new or used. We have even considered just renting over some weekends through the rest of the summer to see how we like it....but rentals in this type of boat are expensive and doesn't do anything really to provide a true appreciation (maintenance, cleaning, etc.) of boat ownership...the family & I only see the fun side when renting so I'm sure it will just "fuel the fire" to get our own boat.

I agree with some of you on the used is more cost effective but am not finding what I'm looking for in the used market; plus with new, I do get a 2 yr warranty on the motor which is some piece of mind for us.

Either way, I'm not buying anything unless its what I want for the price I'm looking for.....I'd be happy to rent for a few weekends and hit the boat shows this winter.

Adrift: thank you for the info on your boat! Really helps me gauge my price point...glad I'm on track! Nice on the extended warranty....figured those are much like auto extended warranties (big bucks for the dealers that sell them); nice to get one for nothing!! Also very glad you and your family like your boat!

All: again, thanks for the advice....being informed as possible is a huge advantage for any new boat owner....this forum rocks!

Any other advice out there I should consider?

Re: New to Boating Questions

Nodaks, what part of the country are you in? They are out there for the taking, you just have to look and be willing to drive.

A guy in my neighborhood had the exact model with the amped up stereo and all the goodies with the tower and all kinds of crap hanging from it. It is a late 2006 185 with the 4.3 engine and he had a full coveage warranty until 8/2012 that is backed by any galstron/volvo authorized dealer. Here were the details from the newsletter:

Asking $17,495
Glastron GX185 with a Volvo 4.3GXI (220 hp)
Ext swim platform
Pullup cleats
Wake tower w/ Board and ski rack, fore & aft HID lights, 2 stero mids and 2 subs
Bimini
Full canvas from bow and main area
EZ Loader cusotm trailer
Trialer spare
All sorts of tubes, vests, skis, ropes and toys for your boating pleasure

I will provide you with my marina mechanic's number and they do all the service and you can have it surveyed by any licensed/bonded person. If you don't have time for a lake test, sorry, you have to test before you buy but i can meet you at any local lake, just need a half day notice. $1,000 deposit secures for you to get financing within 5 days, of which $500 is not refundable if the deal falls through.

He sold it to a guy a couple doors down back in May. He sold it because he lost his job and needed the cash. we talk every now and again an he has another job and will be in another boat very soon, only bigger.

Re: New to Boating Questions

I think you're spending too much for your first boat. By a used model, 10 years old, with all the same features for less than half the price. After boating on it for a year, you'll develop many likes/dislikes that will leave you better informed. Then you can sell that one, and upgrade based on your informed preferences.

Re: New to Boating Questions

Ok...thanks to the advice here; I found a few lightly used boats in the price and age range that we're looking for (along with the '08 Glastron)....anyway, haven't looked at either but here they are:

2003 Sea Ray 182 SRX Bow Rider, 4.3L Merc.
- 92 total hrs
- 2 yrs left on a extended warranty for motor
- Serviced and winterized by a local dealer (so I could verify records)
- includes: extra prop, bumpers/ropes, bow/cockpit canvas covers, Eagle FishStrike 2000 GPS, and a Horizon Handheld Receiver
- asking price: $17k

2005 Larson Senza 186, 5.0L Merc.
- 20 total hrs
- didn't get much out of the owner when emailed about maintenance history
Completely loaded: wakeboard tower, bimini top, sirius radio, mooring cover, bow/cockpit canvas cover, etc.
- asking price: 18,700

Don't know much about Sea Ray but do know that Larson is made by the same company as Glastron....going to look at both this week.

Anyone have thoughts on these two?

Thx for all the great advice; sure helping this first-timer make a smart, informed decision!
