new to boating

hello, I'm brand new to boating but learning as i go<br />I bought a 1978 (invader?) with inboard/outdrive.<br />Looks like a small block chevy 305? but says omc on the Water Jackets? Out drive is OMC 800 with 185 on it. Is 185 my horse power or? I ran it this weekend and it cruises nicely but at full throttle it bogs down and actually runs faster at mid throttle. about 30mph-35mph. My tac reads x100 and it runs about 3<br />on the scale. I got it home and set my points and on the back of my distributer a wire was loose so i tightened it up? its a mallery dist, and rodchester 2bbl carb <br /><br />havent run it since then but was wanting any help or suggestions. IS this top speed, and whats the deal with my rpm's<br /><br />thanks in advance<br /><br />jeremy

the motor thing is pretty normal stuff a compleat tuneup with NEW parts set to the correct specs<br /><br />water ages them very fast<br /><br />new fuel filters then see were you stand if its was sitting a long time it may need a carb rebuild<br /><br />give it some time theres a lot of OMC guys here<br /><br />tommays

Hi Jeremy, welcome to iboats!!<br /><br />OMC, VolvoPenta and mercruiser don't make their own engines - they all use either GM or Ford (early volvo used their own motors but that's another story).<br /><br />You've got a GM with OMC accessories.<br /><br />I suggest some basic maintenance to begin with. A comp test will give you some vital information, followed by a good tuneup. Then we can start to give more specific advise if you have more problems. You're gunna need a manual.<br /><br />Aldo
