Well I recently received from what I can tell is a 1969 MFG 170 Sprint. Although I can not find what it looks like in the other photos. It has a 115 Evinrude which i have found out is a 1969. I was given the boat as a favor to a friend of mine. He told me he had a boat he wanted to get rid of. So I asked him how much he said nothing just come and get it. Well first thought was o boy its going to be in bad shape. Well I went to look at it and to my surprise the boat was in great shape and i mean great.
It was dirty but seemed great. Well than I thought ok well the motor has got to be a mess well i took off the cover and to my surprise was a great looking motor. The boat only had one seat in it so i thought no problem I can get more well that has became very hard to do. But here comes the difficult part. The boat has rails around the front about twelve inches high. They do not stop one piece. On the front is two air horns and beside that is a spotlight. But the pictures of the sprint I have seen do not have that.
So anyways I want to get it water ready. Lights and all so I hooked up the battery and turned the key all the guages lit up and reset and i just wanted to crank real quick to see if the motor was locked and it wasnt. But during this i found that the prop turned to which told me that the boat was in gear. Now from what I have read is that it has Hydr Static drive or something like that. So I start to look under the dash and seen a birds nest of wires that just didnt sit right with me. So now I m starting to fix what I can. I will get some pics as soon as I can to post maybe the other members can give me some helpful tips on making this boat return to the water.

Most of your "chrome assessorys" are add-on's .Some may be OE ,some added by a dealer, some added by a previous owner .
Order a pair of Engine "MUFFS" that hook to a garden hose and go over the water intake of your motor . you'll be able to fire up the motor to see how it runs safely....just idle it NO REVS !!!:) and also pick up a shop manual to help with your motor too . our online store is quick and has most everything cheaper than other online outlets . ( yes - a shameless pitch / but I only live here ) lol
PS. our Johnson/Evinrude and electrical forums are great too !!
Now 'cause I ask everyone ....got any pictures ??? We LOVE pictures !!! peter

I think when you guys see this boat it might make you scratch your head I lloked at fiberclassics and they didnt have the boat either its really wird its like maybe the uears or something is off. I dont know for sure also the windshield is a three piece unlike the photo is one piece. Windshield wipers and all that neat stuff.

Re: New to boats and MFG

Ok Well here is my problem. As I stated before I have a wiring problem. I will purchase a manual tonight for my motor and boat or what ever I need. Now here is my question. I want the best manual that shows wire routes, motor specs all of it. The best of the best. I would like to find the original paperwork that would come with the boat or at least copies. How should I go about doing this?

i don't think there was such a thing, like the owner's manual for a car. it was probably just docs and manual for the motor
you mite check with the dept or natural resources
here in ohio the odnr has a sub section , dept of watercraft, they will run a title serch from the reg #s on the bow.
i did for mine and got back a list of every one that registered the boat from day one!!

as for the wires under the dash, it would probably be just as easy to START OVER!!
run a hot and ground wires from the battery to a fuse block under the dash, then just wire the dash from there.
that way you could put a piece of tape on them to know what they are in the future for more up grades :)

Re: New to boats and MFG

I found some original manuals on ebay so hopefully those will work. I was looking today and there are 4 or 5 wires that run the terminal block to the front of the boat but when i look under the dash I cant tell what goes where. Something else i noticed today is that my throttle handle has three positions. But the handle wil not go back. The side plate says shift with a line so when I cranked the motor tor prop turned even though the button was pushed in the neutral position. I guess maybe I have a bad wire somewhere because the way I understand it is that the motor locks in foward gear all the time. When neutral is engaged thats the only way the motor will start. I dont know really what Im doing. I know I want to rip all the wires out and start over but I was hoping I could make sense of the mess I got but I cant tell what goes where.
