hello all, recently i bought a 71 sea star with a Johnson 50 hp ob, so i get it home fresh gas, and i used a new battery i bought for my jeep, it cranks over but kinda slow, then i noticed smoke from my hot post from my battery connection YIKES! great just what i want to see  still no start, i had water hooked up and i also noticed that i cant find neutral, i can see the cable moving in the shifter but the prop ( i guess thats what u call the impeller) moves, i can grab the impeller and barly turn the motor over, so what u think could cause the hot battery connecter get hot and how can i get it in neutral,
thanks for any help
Jeremy

ps if u need a number for the motor or any info let me know and il find it out as best i can
thanks again

When you remove the cover or cowling from the engine, you'll be able to locate the shift linkage. If it is not electric shift it will have two cables connected to linkage. When moving fom neutral to forward or reverse the shift cable will be the first to move. If you don't see any movement then the cable is more than likely broken or the control box is bad. If you disconnet the shift cable at the engine, you should be able to find neutral half way of the movement of the shift lever.

Because of the electric shift, until the engine starts, it will always be in forward. It goes to neutral automatically when the engine starts. Because you are turning the propeller (not the impeller) against a reduction gear, the engine will turn hard. The impeller is the water pump and is located inside the lower unit. The smoking hot battery post is probably due to one or more of the following. Bad battery cables, bad battery cable connections (check both ends), or a bad starter (drawing too much current).

Re: New to boats and needin alil help

thanks for the help again, today i put a new battery terminal on it and it did run, with no smoke from battery but now i still have a few more ?S is the exaust supposed to come out the prop, and about the prop is it supposed to have alil bit of up and down play in the prop? i was running water threw it, let it try to idle for a min or so and i noticed that it kinda got alil warmer than i thought it would and the starter got alil warmer, is that b.c its mounted straight to the motor? tomorrow im gonna try to understand the threads that tashasdaddy listed and see if i can make since of it... while it was running the prop was turning with the motor so im kinda confussed
thanks again

My father-in-law had a 65 HP evinrude with electric shift. The one thing I remember well was that the special electric shift oil had to be clean. No water at all or no shift.
