Hello everyone, my wife and i recently bought a boat. It is our first.

We purchased a 22' 1974 Slickcraft SS235, powered by a 350v8 with a mercruiser outdrive.

Ive read a few things about this boat and have heard that the hulls are high quality. We picked this one up for 1800. It has good and bad going for it. The trailer has 4 new tires and 4 new hubs. The outdrive was rebuilt not too long ago, and the wiring was redone about the same time. It has a newer depth finder and both the cover and bimini top are both in good shape, as is the upholstery. The bad is that it needs some deck wood, the trailer wiring at the hitch is butchered up, some of the snaps for the cover have pulled out. The engine needs manifold gaskets or manifolds, the cubby door is missing, and and a bunch of little things need fixing (30+ year old boat.)

I build transmissions for a living and ive been working on cars since highschool. I plan on doing all of the work myself, my neighbor who is 10x handier than i am offered to help out if he can come out on the boat, lol. Ive got 4 project cars and plan on selling the 87 Fiero GT i have to fund the boat project.

Yes i am new to boats and i have a million questions about props, deck wood, sterndrives, trimming, yadda yadda. Im looking forward to getting this boat back on the water.

Welcome to iboats! Read these boards and you will get just about any question answered.

I would suggest that you spend some time reading the restoration section. There is tons of information on repairing (and inspecting) your hull.

There is a section devoted to trailers too.

There are sections to fix it all!

Welcome aboard. Choose the section you post your question in carefully and you will get some really expert help and advice out here.
Nice boat by the looks of it.

Welcome to iboats!

I want to see a picture of the Fiero. Man, that is a true survivor...I haven't seen one in 15 years...

Congrats. Reel nice boat!
Since this is your first, you may want to check to see if you're required to have an operators certificate or something. Most states do.
Have fun!

Re: New to boats.

What part of Charleston do you reside?

I didnt get home soon enough to take a current picture in the daylight.

I found this one i took shortly after i bought it.

Its not a bad little car, ive already sunk some money and time into it and improve alot of things but i just dont have time for 4 project cars, hell if i like this boat enough i may sell off the 88 firebird i recently bought. I have to keep the 84 camaro and the 86 monte SS. Those were the wife and I's first cars.

All the Fiero really needs is a paint job to look really sharp. Since ive gotten it ive fixed:
exhaust manifold gaskets
ported the exhaust manifolds
Tune up (plugs, wires, cap/rotor)
Installed several "Rodney Dickman" accessories
cd player
fixed the shifter
put newer tires on
installed 4th gen fbody seats
new pioneer 4x10s in the front
new battery and grounds
all new motor mounts
and some other small things

I have a few things i want to do before i sell it:
Headliner redone
Window guides
side marker
front fiero emblem

Oh well i think ill have more fun with a boat than with this car, ive never even had it on the road since i bought it.

Re: New to boats.

I'm on Johns Island. The Fiero looks good. It must be one of the only ones around Charleston. I've never even seen 1 on the road.

I agree that you'll have more fun with the boat, especially around here with our climate and nearly unlimited choices of where to boat. You're a lot closer to the lakes, too. Since you are well versed in project cars, you'll already be used to throwing money at machines and boats are willing targets!!:D
