I found this forum after I bought a 1992 capri cuddy w/ the force 120 L - drive. The hull is ok, some grime and hard water, the interior is about 90%. The steering cable was locked up, now replaced, pulled the plugs they were black, cleaned, checked low speed adjust, was at over 2 turns out, reset to 1 turn out for starters. Have not had the boat in the water, but I think I got an OK deal, payed $3200. So, what are the major problems with the L - drive??

Reliability, lack of tech's to work on it, lack of parts. If you can keep one together long enough to enjoy it then please do so. However once they go - they are gone. Not really worth the time, effort or expense to repair.
It was a really good idea when they first introduced it - however the sales slumped, not enough mechanics were properly trained and the parts chain literally dried up. One of those good ideas gone screwy.

Another issue with the "L" drive is the fact that now your hull is propprietary. You can no longer re-power without some modification. I/O setups have a verticle transom, your transom is horizontal. Engine compartment is also smaller. I have a 1989 Capri that used to have the "L" drive in it. I am currently restoring it and will be re-powering it soon.

Congrats on your boat and Welcome to Iboats!

Re: New to forum, 1st Boat

Thanks for the replies, I now have the boat licenced and have had it out a few times. I think the main jets are too rich, got the low speed tuned down a bit, with only 120 hp did not want to plane when three people were on the back seat! Moved two up a bit and all ok. Added a couple of pole holders and now the wife and father in-law are happy. It is nice to be on the water in a good sized boat! Tim

Here are a couple of pics, the boat is in the garage so the out drive does not have easy access right now. Sorry my jpg editor will not save any smaller than 116 kb, anyone have any suggestions for a freeware editor that will do this? Thanks, Tim
